The 40th Vuelta al Táchira took place from January 8 to 21, 2005 in Venezuela . The bike race was held in fourteen stages over a distance of 1800 kilometers. It belonged to the UCI America Tour 2005 and was classified in category 2.2.
Overall winner was the Venezuelan José Rujano from Selle Italia-Colombia ahead of his compatriots José Chacón and Carlos Maya (both Loteria del Táchira ). Rujano first captured the jersey on the sixth stage, only to lose it again to José Chacón. But in the time trial on the penultimate day he regained the overall lead and defended it on the final stage. Rujano also secured the mountain classification , while Chacón won the points classification . Rujano repeated his previous success at the Vuelta al Táchira with the victory.

At the start were teams from Colombia , Cuba , Chile , Mexico and Venezuela , including two national teams. A total of fifteen teams took part.
