William Earl Brown (born September 7, 1963 in Golden Pond , Kentucky ) is an American actor .

Life

William Earl Brown attended Calloway County High School . He studied theater at Murray State University and then acting at DePaul University in Chicago , where he was a classmate of John C. Reilly and Gillian Anderson , among others . He established himself in the Chicago theater scene before moving to Los Angeles to also act in film. Although he was only addressed by his middle name Earl throughout his life, when he registered with the Screen Actors Guild he created a stage name with the initial of his first name William, so as not to be confused with the actor who sounds the same as Earl Boen .

Brown made his debut in 1991 with a small extra role in the drama Backdraft - Men Who Go Through Fire as an actor in a feature film. Since then he has been in films like Crazy About Mary and The Sessions - When Words Touch and occasionally in television series like CSI: On the Trail of the Criminals and Justified . He got more attention than Dan Dority in the western series Deadwood . From 2004 to 2006 he played Al Swearengen's henchman , played by Ian McShane , in 36 episodes.
