WNBA Draft
 <2012

The 2013 WNBA Draft was the 17th talent draw of the Women's National Basketball Association and took place on April 15, 2013 at ESPN Studios in Bristol , Connecticut, USA . The first round of the draft was broadcast nationwide on ESPN2. The second and third rounds could be seen on ESPNU.

With the First Overall Draft Pick, the Phoenix Mercury selected the American Brittney Griner . The Americans Elena Delle Donne ( Chicago Sky ) and Skylar Diggins ( Tulsa Shock ) were selected in second and third place . These three players had already been marketed by the WNBA as future crowd pullers (“3 to See”) before the draft.

A total of 36 players from seven nations were selected from the WNBA franchises in three rounds. The only European players selected were Belgian Emma Meesseman ( Washington Mystics ) in 19th position, French Diandra Tchatchouang (San Antonio Silver Stars) one position behind, and Turkish Olcay Çakır ( New York Liberty ) in 27th.

Draft order

The draft order will be determined by the draft lottery on September 26, 2012. The four teams ( Washington Mystics , Tulsa Shock , Phoenix Mercury and Chicago Sky ) that did not qualify for the play-offs in the 2012 season take part; or their right to vote holder. The worst team in the regular season had a 44.6 percent chance of winning the lottery; the best of the four teams not qualified for the playoffs had a 10.4 percent chance.

The draft order of the eight play-off participants is set based on their table status in the regular 2012 season. The rule is that the team with the fewest wins is in fifth place. The draft order determined by means of the lottery is only relevant for the first round. The draft order of the second and third round is determined purely on the basis of the table status in the regular season. However, the teams have the option of acquiring voting rights from other teams via transfers or giving their own to other teams.

The Phoenix Mercury won the lottery and moved up from second to first place in the draft order. The Washington Mystics , the worst team of the regular season, slipped to fourth place in the draft order despite the highest chance of victory.

  • 1 In the third round, the Los Angeles Sparks decided on the 20-year-old Ukrainian Alina Jagupowa . A WNBA regulation, however, stipulates that players outside the United States may only be selected in the draft at the age of 20. The WNBA interprets this rule in such a way that international players may only be selected in the draft if they turn 20 in the year of the draft. Since Alina Jagupowa will be 21 in the year of the draft, the signing of the young Ukrainian was stopped by the league.
