Waggum is a district of Braunschweig . It is located in the northeast of the city and belongs to the city district 112 - Wabe-Schunter-Beberbach .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document with the name "Wagken" in a certificate of ownership of King Heinrich II for the canon monastery Steterburg from 1007. The place name means "home of a Wago / Wacco".

A traditional story in Waggum says that Charlemagne is said to have baptized Saxony or Wenden at a spring in the local area . This cannot be proven by writing, but the name of the corridor with the name "Taufkamp" exists on old maps. A small stream once diverted the water from the source and flowed into the Beberbach , which is further north and flows into the Schunter near Bienrode .

The airport

In 1934 the Reich Aviation Ministry bought the airfield in Broitzem for military purposes, so that the city of Braunschweig had to build a new commercial airport. An area in the Waggum district was selected for this, which led to a reduction in the area under cultivation for asparagus. As compensation, the farmers were given the opportunity to get work on the new airfield or in the expansion of the motorway. Braunschweig-Waggum Airport began operations on May 27, 1936 . This airfield, which was actually built for civil purposes, was taken over by the Luftwaffe on August 27, 1939 , in order to set up an air base and military airfield here under the code name "Weißkohl".

The airport in the south of Waggum is now called "Braunschweig-Wolfsburg Airport" (regional and research airport, formerly used as a military airfield). It is also the seat of the Federal Aviation Office .

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a stylized golden spring on a blue shield.

The spring symbolizes the water point at whose drain the settlement was created. This source is located on the airport premises. The colors blue-yellow stand for the state and the district of Braunschweig and indicate that the settlement has belonged to this district for centuries.

Arnold Rabbow designed the coat of arms and it was adopted by the local council on February 7, 1980.
