Wake of the Flood is the sixth studio album by the band Grateful Dead and thus the tenth overall.

history

The album was recorded from August 4 to September 7, 1973 and first released on October 15 of the same year.

After Grateful Dead had fulfilled the contract with Warner Bros. Records , they recorded this album for the first time with their own label Grateful Dead Records . The label was actually only founded to sell albums and distribute merchandising after concerts outside the concert hall . The label operated until 1976 when the band signed a contract with Arista Records .

In addition to Grateful Dead Records , the band founded Round Records at the same time . The former should be for group projects, the latter for solo projects.

Thus, Wake of the Flood was the first album in which the band was not only responsible for the recordings, but also for the production and marketing. The fans were informed about the new album with a newsletter.

The band has only released live albums since American Beauty , making Wake of the Flood their first studio album in three years.

Keith Godchaux was solely responsible for the keyboard after the death of Ron McKernan .

As with the previous studio albums, the songs that were recorded were tested at concerts beforehand and adapted to requirements. Grateful Dead tested some of the songs at every concert and live performance over a period of six months and changed them before they were recorded in the studio.

In 1995 the album was released again on CD, before a revised version of the seven songs and three additional songs were released by Rhino Records for the box set Beyond Description (1973-1989) in 2004 , which were then also released as a single CD in 2006.

"Let Me Sing Your Blues Away" / "Here Comes Sunshine" and "Eyes Of The World" / "Weather Report Suite Part 1" were released as singles from the album.

successes

The album reached number 18 on the Billboard charts .
