Walter Auffenberg (born February 6, 1928 in Detroit , Michigan , † January 17, 2004 in Gainesville , Florida ) was an American biologist who mainly dealt with Komodo dragons . The species Auffenberg's monitor lizard is named after him.

Life

In 1969, Auffenberg and his family moved to Komodo Island in Indonesia. This enabled him to research the monitor lizards there and their behavior in their natural environment over a period of 11 months. Together with a local assistant, they managed to capture 50 individuals of the species and mark them for identification. His research results should also prove to be groundbreaking for the conservation breeding of animals in human care.
