Walter Gebhardt (born November 10, 1945 ) is a former Austrian soccer player and soccer coach .
Club career
Walter Gebhardt's sporting career began in the third-class Viennese league as a striker for SK Straßenbahn , where he became captain of the fighting team at the age of 16. At a match of the armed forces selection, where he was used as a defender, he was noticed by the supervising duo Robert Körner and Franz Binder from SK Rapid Vienna . Shortly thereafter, in 1965, he moved to the Green-Whites, where he replaced long-time regular Paul Halla in the right-back position. His first season in Hütteldorf ended with the runner-up title and a defeat in the cup final, but in the following two years the Rapidler prevailed in the championship with the defensive row from Gebhardt, Walter Glechner and Erich Fak . In 1968 and 1969 there were also two successes in the ÖFB Cup .
After six seasons as a regular at Rapid, Gebhardt accepted an offer from Linz ASK in 1971 , where he mostly played in the middle of the table for the next few years. When the Linz team were relegated in 1978, he left the club and ended his first division career. After a short trip to South Africa, he took over the position of player-coach at the second division newcomer USK Anif , but could not prevent Salzburg's immediate relegation. Later he also worked as a player coach in Amstetten.
National team
Gebhardt made his debut in the national team under team boss Eduard Frühwirth in a 1-0 win over Ireland in May 1966. In the following three years he was a regular on the defensive of the Austrians, where he often played alongside his club colleague Walter Glechner. In qualifying for the European Championship in 1968 , which took place during this period , the Soviet Union had to admit defeat. Gebhardt played his 17th and last game in the national dress in September 1969 in a 1-1 draw against Germany .
Coaching career
After he made his first experiences as a coach at the end of his active career, Gebhardt returned to Rapid in 1985, where he became assistant coach under Vladimir Marković and then exercised this function under his successor Otto Barić . At the beginning of 1988 he accepted an offer from the ÖFB and became the assistant coach of team boss Josef Hickersberger and at the same time responsible coach of the U-21 national team .
