Walter "Bubi" Glechner (born February 12, 1939 ; † January 29, 2015 in Vienna ) was an Austrian football player . The long-time captain of SK Rapid Wien won four championship titles with the club and played in the Austrian national team .

Club career

Glechner started as a ten-year-old in the Rapid Youngsters under the youth coach Franz Wagner . He made his championship debut for the fighting team in April 1959, when he replaced the injured Ernst Happel and soon became his successor in the stopper position. Already in his first full season 1959/60 Rapid could get the championship title, whereby the defensive row with Paul Halla , Glechner and Josef Höltl allowed the fewest goals against in the league. In the following season, the club therefore played in the European Cup of national champions , where they advanced to the semi-finals and failed there at the eventual winner Benfica Lisbon . Another championship title followed in 1964.

A broken shin in April 1965 interrupted the career of the defensive boss, who had meanwhile risen to become team captain and was also known as the master of the offside trap , for almost a year. After his return, Rapid was able to achieve two more championship titles and two cup wins with the defensive row in the new composition of Walter Gebhardt , Glechner and Erich Fak . The Hütteldorfer also reached the quarter-finals in the championship in 1968/69 , where Manchester United proved to be too strong.

In 1970, Rapid signed Gerd Springer, a new coach, who pushed the previous captain off to the reserve team. After a year without significant appearances, Glechner left his home club and signed with the second division club SV Admira Wiener Neustadt . In the first year the club was able to achieve promotion to the top division, where the team, which included three other former national players with Rudolf Flögel , Alfons Dirnberger and Karl Fröhlich , came in last. After relegation, Glechner stayed with the club for a year and then ended his career at Hütte Krems .

National team

Glechner and his club colleague Walter Skocik belonged to the Austrian junior team that won the 1957 UEFA youth tournament. He made his senior national team debut under team boss Karl Decker in May 1960 in a 4-1 win against Scotland . At first he was unable to secure a regular place because the experienced Karl Stotz was usually used as a stopper , but from the end of 1962 Glechner was an integral part of the national team. In April 1965 he suffered the aforementioned fracture of the tibia in a World Cup qualifying match against the GDR in a duel with Hermann Stöcker . After a one-year break, he returned to the national team in May 1966, where he now often played alongside his club colleague Gebhardt and was used in all international matches until his departure in June 1968 against the Soviet Union . In total, Glechner wore the national dress 35 times, but the Austrians were unable to qualify for an international tournament during this time.
