Walter Manoschek (born August 21, 1957 in Vienna ) is an Austrian political scientist and associate professor at the University of Vienna .

Life

In 1990 Manoschek completed his political science studies at the University of Vienna with Dr. phil. and worked from 1992 to 2001 as an assistant at the Institute for State and Political Science at the University of Vienna. Since 2001 he has completed his habilitation at the same university for political science and has been an associate professor, from 2004 to 2006 he was also head of the institute for political science at this university.

As part of his academic work, Manoschek mainly dealt with the first half of the 20th century in Austria and Germany and, as editor, was involved in the publication of some works on the crimes of the Wehrmacht in World War II . In addition, on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Science and Research, he carried out research on the history of the victims of Nazi military justice , in which he came to the conclusion that in 1300 investigated cases of Austrian armed forces deserters, only two were homicides.

In November 2012, a documentary by Walter Manoschek was shown at the 50th Viennale . The documentary Then I'm a Murderer deals with an end- stage crime in German Schützen . Elfriede Jelinek writes about this film: “It's a great art. That has happened too seldom so far, just, as I said, a representation without zeal and without anger, of someone who has passionate sympathy for the victims, without ahistorically demonizing and demonizing the perpetrators. Someone who knows tries to understand anyway. This is very much."

politics

For the National Council election in 2008, the news magazine profil asked Manoschek about his election decision and declared himself in favor of the Communist Party of Austria :

“The SPÖ and ÖVP are potentially forming a coalition with the FPÖ or BZÖ, which is impossible in terms of democratic politics [...] The KPÖ has clear positions, many of which I share. Before I vote invalid, I choose KPÖ. "
