Walter von Sanden-Guja (born June 18, 1888 in Marienwalde , Darkehmen district , East Prussia ; † February 7, 1972 in Hüde , Diepholz district, Lower Saxony) was a German writer , naturalist , poet .

Life

In 1911 Walter von Sanden-Guja took over the parental property in Launingken and Klein Guja (no longer existent). In 1914 he married Edith von Schlueter and was called up as an officer for military service in the same year at the beginning of the First World War . After the end of the war, in 1918, he began his first natural history research on Lake Nordenburg and the Rawda River . His first book Guja - See der Vögel was published in 1933 in Königsberg . In January 1945, Walter von Sanden-Guja and his wife Edith fled from East Prussia to Carinthia via the approaching war operations over the Fresh Lagoon . From 1946 he lived in Graefenholz (Lower Franconia). Von Sanden-Guja found his “second home” in Hüde am Dümmer . For the publication of his research results he received the culture award of the Landsmannschaft Ostpreußen for literature in 1958 . In 1965 Walter von Sanden-Guja was awarded the Cross of Merit of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit for his commitment to preserving the stupid.

Services

Walter von Sanden-Guja researched the fauna and flora of East Prussia and documented these findings in numerous photographs and books. In the years of National Socialism , his works were censored because he could not be integrated into the party structure.

He campaigned strongly for the preservation of the then relatively unpolluted Dümmer (Lower Saxony), a flat lake surrounded by a ring dike . The emergence of intensive agricultural production led to the loss of oxygen in the water through over-fertilization , which made the lake biologically impoverished. The natural scientist did not experience the reduction of harmful effects such as the construction of a sewage ring main.
