Wanica is a district in northeast Suriname . It is located southwest of Paramaribo , bordering the Saramacca district to the west, the Para district to the south and the Commewijne district to the east . In the north it borders on the Atlantic for a few kilometers .
Along with the Paramaribo district, Wanica is the smallest and most densely populated district of Suriname. Its main town, Lelydorp , was originally called Kofidjompo , but was renamed Lelydorp in 1905 after the Dutch engineer and governor of the colony Cornelis Lely .
In the parliament ( De Nationale Assemblée ) the district of Wanica is represented by seven members.
While the population of the neighboring capital and district of Paramaribo fell slightly according to the results of the housing and population census in 2012, the district of Wanica had the largest increase of all districts compared to the previous census in 2004 with around 32,200 people.
Administrative division
Since 2017, the Wanica district has been divided into two administrative areas due to the increase in population, Wanica north-west and Wanica south-east. The two areas are in turn divided into the following departments (decentralized):
