Para is a district in the north of Suriname . In the north the districts Saramacca , Wanica and Commewijne border , in the south the districts Brokopondo and Sipaliwini , in the east the district Marowijne borders on the district Para.

History and tourism

One of the district's tourist destinations is Jodensavanne , a place founded in the 17th century by Jews who originally fled Spain. In 1685 one of the first brick synagogues in the New World was built here, the ruins of which can still be seen. The iodine savannah in Suriname was almost completely destroyed in a fire in 1832. At this point, the place and the plantations there were already deserted and most of the residents had moved to Paramaribo . During the Second World War a barrack camp was built here, in which around 150 alleged or actual supporters of the National Socialist Movement (NSB) from the Dutch East Indies were interned from September 1942 . They were u. a. busy uncovering the old Jewish tombs.

Politics and administrative structure

In the parliament ( De Nationale Assemblée ) the district Para is represented by 3 members.

The district of Para is in turn divided into the following five departments (decentralized):

  • Para-Noord
  • Para-Oost
  • Para-Zuid
  • Bigi Poika
  • Carolina

Economy and Transport

The economy is dominated by bauxite mining and forestry. In Para there are important bauxite mining and production sites in the country.

The largest airport in the country, Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport, is also located in the Para district in Zanderij .
