The current coat of arms of Cameroon dates from 1986.

description

The coat of arms has a straight red tip that divides the shield into green and gold .

In the red tip of the shield there is a blue outline map of Cameroon, and the scales of Justitia with a golden star hovering over it.

Behind the shield there are two crossed fasces that represent state authority.

The motto of Cameroon is written above the sign in the two official languages English and French :

" Paix, Travail, Patrie "
" Peace, Work, Fatherland "
( Peace, work, fatherland )

The older coat of arms had a blue five-pointed star in the gold and green field. A golden banner was spread over the coat of arms.

A banner under the sign states the name of the state, also in English and French:

Republic of Cameroon
République du Cameroun
( Republic of Cameroon )

The color of the shield corresponds to that of the flag of Cameroon .

symbolism

  • The red triangle stands for the Cameroon Mountain, the highest mountain in West Africa at 4095 meters.
  • The triangle is covered with the sword and the scales of Justitia , the Roman goddess of justice.
  • The bundle of rods with hatchet (Liktorenbündel) is also a symbol of Roman antiquity and represents the republican form of government.

history

Planned flag of German Cameroon, 1914

The German Colonial Office designed a coat of arms for the protected area of Cameroon that showed an elephant's head from the front under the imperial eagle. This coat of arms was placed on the flag of the German Empire .

After independence, Cameroon initially only had one seal, and it did not have a national coat of arms until December 31, 1960. It showed a blue star in the upper part of the green and yellow stripes.

With the change of the flag in 1975 the star in the green field disappeared, since the end of 1986 it has been in the middle stripe.
