Multi 2 as a vehicle transporter
Armored hook loading system MAN 38.440 8 × 8 of the Austrian Armed Forces

The Multi is a swap-loader vehicle of the Bundeswehr , the name of which is an acronym and stands for mechanized handling, storage and transport integration and is technically based on the civilian roll-off container transport system. The second generation of these trucks has armor .

In addition to a second vehicle type with loading technology from Palfinger, the Austrian Armed Forces use the very similar hook loading system MAN 38.440 8 × 8 .

development

Since the beginning of 1980, the Bundeswehr has been testing swap-loading systems (both ISO containers and roll-off containers) for the supply force in order to increase the handling capacity of bulk consumer goods such as artillery ammunition and mines . A total of three companies took part - MAN , IVECO and Mercedes-Benz . At the beginning of 1990 development switched to the so-called 3rd generation of wheeled vehicles, and Mercedes-Benz dropped out of development. The two remaining manufacturers provided mobility level B (no joint use with combat vehicles, but use away from roads in all weather) with 14 t payload, six carrier vehicles each, four in the 8 × 8 configuration for the army and two in 8 × 4 for the Air Force . MAN sent the FX 90 with a modular driver's cab and IVECO's 380 E 42 with a modified driver's cab into the competition.

Due to new guidelines from politics and developments in the countries of operations, especially in the former Yugoslavia , the Federal Ministry of Defense tendered the swap body system for immediate use. From 1994 the Multi A 1.1 was initially purchased. A total of 358 vehicles based on the MAN gl were ordered with an option for a further 452, which should cost around 15 billion German marks together.

A total requirement of a total of 1226 swap body systems was determined. The parallel development of mobility level B was discontinued in 1999.

In autumn 1999, who taught German Federal Court of Auditors , the Parliament about unnecessary additional costs through early procurement of this suspension, competition, inadequate testing, and that does not like are intended used the 358 vehicles due to technical problems. The budget committee reacted to this in the summer of 2000 with the expectation that further procurements would be postponed until at least safe loading and transport would be possible without restriction. The Ministry of Defense then denied any deficiencies, but had improvements in dialogue with the Federal Audit Office until the Audit Committee in March 2001 only demanded more than the two swap bodies per vehicle in order to enable economic use.

Self-sufficient handling of containers was only required and implemented later during the pre-series testing of the second generation.

Development result

Charging technology

The removable loading device (WLE) AWL 172 T comes from the company Atlas Weyhausen .

Load carrier country

Standard equipment are so-called flat racks ; These are interchangeable swap bodies (WLP) without side walls for the transport of ammunition to vehicles. The disadvantage of these racks is that they cannot be stacked, are not ISO- compliant and are not suitable for sea transport.

Load carrier lake

Due to these restrictions, the Drehtainer company developed so-called Internal Flat Racks (IFR). These can be loaded into ISO containers without restrictions and enable safe storage and ammunition transport by sea.

Additional equipment

Additional equipment and the container transport concept include:

  • Swap body platforms with tarpaulin in large and small versions
  • 20-foot tank containers for water and fuel
  • Additional container equipment (CEA) to accommodate 20-foot ISO containers
  • MuConPers. The abbreviation means MULTI-capable protected container for passenger transport and was developed by EADS after the attack on an ISAF bus belonging to the German contingent in Afghanistan for the mine- and bullet-proof transport of up to 18 soldiers. The MULTI 2 FSA is to serve as the transport vehicle. The Bundeswehr procures a total of 20 TransProtec / MuConPers.

Initial procurement

In the army, every vehicle is assigned five swap bodies with a total payload of 14 t each according to the StAN . For the armed forces base , the concept provides for three swap bins, while the two remaining bunk beds are to be held back for supplies from depots and the armaments industry.

variants

Multi A 1.1

MULTI with Flat Rack and Wiesel TOW as cargo

A 6-cylinder in-line engine from MAN equipped with exhaust gas turbocharging and charge air cooling with an output of 400 hp accelerates the truck to a top speed of up to 84 km / h . By October 1, 1996, MAN built 85 of the 358 vehicles with emission class Euro 1, then in Euro 2. The four-wheel drive vehicle also has a split gearbox, converter clutch, retarder , differential locks in the front and rear axles and one Differential lock in the transfer case. The total weight is 32 t.

Multi 2 (A3 / A4 FSA)

Multi 2 during testing, ballast weights on the swap body

The Multi 2 is an armored truck based on the SX series from MAN with an output of 400 hp and automatic transmission . In contrast to the retrofittable modular protective equipment (MSA), vehicle protection equipment (FSA) is already integrated into the vehicle during construction. As with the ATF Dingo , the entire cab is a protective cell and offers up to three soldiers a certain level of protection against NBC weapons , infantry ammunition and land mines . The truck has a remote-controllable mount from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann type 1530 for various armaments for self-protection. The Multi 2 is longer than the first generation. The cab now offers sleeping space for two people and more storage space. It has a permissible total weight of 39 t.

Development of the Multi 2 began in 2001 and in 2003 led to two pre-series Multi A3 models that were tested in Kosovo and Afghanistan . Series delivery of the Multi A4 began in December 2010, of which 157 units were initially ordered. As an innovation, the Multi A4 can also load and set down ISO containers without tools . At the end of 2011, over 150 Multi A4s were stationed in Afghanistan. The Multi A4 is built by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles . Its windshield is eight centimeters thick and weighs 23 tons when empty.
