history
The first project for a hut came from the Geneva section in 1868. Instead, however, two guides from Randa built a refuge for 10 people at the current hut location. Financially overwhelmed, they sold the refuge for CHF 1510 to the Monte Rosa section . The hut, which was obviously in a bad condition from 1883, fell into disrepair and was deleted from the list of huts in 1891. A new hut with 22 places was built in 1900 on an area of approx. 5 × 4 meters with the help of the Basel section. In 1975 there was an expansion to 30 beds.
On the occasion of the 100th birthday of Franz Lochmatter , who fell fatally in 1933 during the descent from the Weisshornspitze over the east ridge (normal ridge) on the great gendarme, which is now called the Lochmatterturm , the mountain guides of the Mattertal valley continued on Saturday 23 September 1978, a metal cross on the top of the Weisshorn. On Sunday, September 24, 1978, the blessing of the cross and a commemoration ceremony took place at the Weisshorn hut.
