Wendelin Weingartner (born February 7, 1937 in Innsbruck ) is a former Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) who was Governor of Tyrol from 1993 to 2002 .

Life

Wendelin Weingartner studied law at the University of Innsbruck and graduated in 1961. Since 1957 he has been a member of the student association AV Raeto-Bavaria Innsbruck in the ÖCV . In 1963 he worked for the Tyrolean provincial government, from 1964 to 1966 he worked at the Administrative Court in Vienna . He then returned to the Tyrolean provincial government and in 1984 became chairman of the board of the Landes-Hypothekenbank.

From March 16, 1991 to July 1, 2000 he was chairman of the ÖVP in Tyrol, from September 24, 1993 to October 26, 2002 Governor of Tyrol. During Weingartner's legislative period of 1999, the ÖVP lost for the first time in its history an absolute majority in the Tyrolean state parliament . In 2002, Weingartner retired early in favor of his successor Herwig van Staa .

In recent times, Weingartner has often appeared at patriotic events organized by the South Tyrolean riflemen and repeatedly called for South Tyrol's self-determination and its detachment from Italy .
