Who dies earlier is dead longer is a German comedy film by Marcus H. Rosenmüller that was released in 2006 . 1.8 million cinema-goers saw the Upper Bavarian rascal story produced by Roxy Film in cooperation with Bayerischer Rundfunk , which is characterized by a considerable magical realism .

action

The eleven-year-old Sebastian Schneider lives in the fictional Upper Bavarian village of Germringen with his single father Lorenz, the landlord of the "Kandler" restaurant, and his older brother Franz.

Sebastian is a rascal who one day learns from his brother during an argument that his mother Sophie did not die in an accident, as has previously been alleged to him, but in Sebastian's birth. The angry brother accuses Sebastian of being solely responsible for his mother's death. Sebastian takes the allegations very seriously and feels guilty from now on. Franz also tells him that after death one has to atone in purgatory if one has committed too many sins.

While he toils in his nursery with allegations, some villagers rehearse in his father's business, a comedy in which a witch trial takes place. Sebastian hears excerpts from this piece and mixes up his self-reproaches and ideas about the Last Judgment in regular nightmares . Sebastian has already played a lot of pranks and imagines that he will be sentenced to "14 years of purgatory". To avoid this fate, he tries to become immortal. He learns that one can become immortal by procreating. When he asks his pretty teacher Mrs. Dorstreiter if she might want to fuck him, he gets into trouble. Then he decides to learn the guitar , because on a school trip he learned from radio presenter Alfred, the husband of his teacher Mrs. Dorstreiter, that music can make you immortal.

When Sebastian realizes that immortality is not possible, he decides to look for a new wife for his father in order to wash himself away from his sins and to make up for his supposed guilt. He gets support from his school friend Evi, who is in love with Sebastian. Sebastian tries to pair his father with Evi's mother, because she meets the criteria that a woman should have according to the opinion of the regulars : A brains, a gschick and a good ass . It can also " Levites read". Both children try to support the pairing with a prayer. However, your prayers are only answered in relation to Lorenz Schneider, who falls in love with Sebastian's teacher Mrs. Dorstreiter - she reciprocates his feelings.

However, Sebastian is now facing the next problem: his teacher is married to radio host Alfred. In his madness and driven by his nightmares, the boy first decides to kill Alfred. With a revolver he climbs up to the radio station on the Wendelstein . There he finds the radio presenter who has already learned about the relationship between Lorenz and Veronika Dorstreiter. He hung himself up in the studio but is still alive and gasps for help. Sebastian points the revolver at the hanged man and shoots, intentionally or by accident, the rope hanging from the ceiling. Afterwards he accidentally drinks from a glass of water that Alfred filled with an overdose of sleeping pills in a first suicide attempt.

After Sebastian and Alfred are cured again, Sebastian visits Alfred at the station, where he lets him play guitar live on the radio (“Now we will make you immortal”).

title

The Wendelstein with the BR transmitter. During the film, the radio station in which Alfred works is in the building on the summit.
Kandlerwirt and branch church of the Birth of Mary, Oberbiberg

The saying “Who dies earlier, is longer dead” is used, for example, in the radio play about the Viennese folk singer Augustin by Wolfgang Ambros , Manfred diving and Joesi Prokopetz from 1980 and in 2004 in Tatort: One corpse too many .

occupation

In order to find an actor for the main role of the film, over 600 children were cast . The search was carried out in schoolyards and soccer fields, among other places.

Fritz Karl , who plays Lorenz Schneider, like some of the other actors involved, does not come from Bavaria; he is Austrian . He first had to learn the West Central Bavarian dialect . For this purpose, Marcus H. Rosenmüller recorded Karl's entire Bavarian text on a CD. In an interview on the DVD of the film, Hans Schuler emphasizes the importance of the Bavarian dialect for this film. In another German dialect or even in Standard German, the film would not work like that.

Locations

The idea of producing a film on the Wendelstein , Marcus H. Rose Mueller came begins or is partially, when he and a friend, with whom he plays in a band together in a tour of the BR stations Wendelstein participated . Here you have to import the band's video to become rock stars, joked Rosi's friend. Then Rosenmüller, together with Christian Lerch , wrote several scripts in order to finally decide who dies earlier is longer dead . And so some photos were also taken on Wendelstein. Alfred's radio station was set up in part of the panorama restaurant and the chapel on the Wendelstein can also be seen in one shot. Even when Sebastian goes to the radio station alone towards the end of the film, these scenes were shot near the Wendelstein near the Mitteralm .

The Kandlerhof , in which the tavern as well as the basement and courtyard were found for the shoot, is the Kandler guesthouse in Oberbiberg . The cemetery where Evis great-grandmother is buried is next to the inn. The school Sebastian attends is in Brannenburg . The cemetery where Sebastian's mother is buried is at the St. Margarethen Church in Brannenburg. However, the access to the cemetery was turned at the Ruhpolding mountain cemetery . There is also the statue of the Madonna, which can be seen several times in the film. The scene in which Frau Dorstreiter almost runs into Sebastian on her bicycle was also made there.

Sebastian's nightmares, in which the Last Judgment appears above him , were filmed in a disused tower silo at the Überreiterhof by Anna Krömmer in Garching. The setting of the court is based on the pictures by Hieronymus Bosch .

music

The soundtrack for Who dies earlier is dead longer comes from Gerd Baumann . The pieces played on the radio during the film are also, without exception, part of the film music. One of these ( Slipping Down the Universe ) is referred to as a piece by guitarist John Ferdinand Woodstock, a fictional musician whose name is based on the Woodstock Festival . The musician also has several short appearances in the film and is played by Gerd Baumann himself.

The soundtrack was released on CD. The song Big-a-Dog, Big-a-Bite was released as a single in an extended remix version. The interpreter is John Ferdinand Woodstock & The Rebirth Experience . The Cologne-based producer duo Leschet + Wilde produced a club remix of the track Big-a-Dog, Big-a-Bite on behalf of Gerd Baumann.

Costume design

The color of Sebastian's t-shirt changes as the film progresses. While it is light blue at the beginning, it gets darker and darker as the number of sins increases. When Sebastian dreams, his clothes have a dark edge, in reality this edge is white. The Home T-shirt that Radio DJ Alfred wears a few times is a replica of a John Lennon T-shirt .

reception

The film received mostly positive reviews, according to Filmstarts.de "Rosenmüller's film is remarkable for a debut and manages to bring a breath of fresh air into German cinema."

The lexicon of the international film is: “Turbulent rascal story in Bavarian dialect, which oscillates between comedy, swank and peasant theater in a funny and disrespectful way, but never takes the story lightly for all the jokes. In this cinematic compendium of consolation, everyone ultimately depends on bare existence: one because he fears purgatory, the other because they see life as a gift. "
