Werner Senn (born October 29, 1958 in Zams ) is an Austrian lawyer, helicopter pilot, ministerial advisor and former athlete. Since December 1, 2005 he has been the head of the Austrian Air Police in the Federal Ministry of the Interior .

Life

After training as an office clerk, Werner Senn joined the Austrian Federal Gendarmerie in 1978 . After completing the specialist course for duty guards in Mödling , he was trained as a gendarmerie mountain guide, as a state-certified ski instructor and ski guide and as a flight rescuer at the Federal Ministry of the Interior. In 1983 he started his service as a flight rescuer at the Innsbruck flight operations center . In 1988 he took over the leadership as alpine operations leader at the Federal Gendarmeriekommando Landeck.

After passing the university entrance exam in 1993, Werner Senn studied law at the University of Innsbruck . As part of his diploma thesis, he dealt scientifically with the subject of "legal problems of air ambulance". In 1998 he graduated with a master's degree in law.

During the avalanche disaster in Galtür in February 1999, Werner Senn acted as the operations manager. His services in this mission were honored with the award of the gold medal on the red ribbon for services to the Republic of Austria (lifesaving medal). In the following years he was co-founder, initiator and managing director of ASI-Tirol (Alpine Safety and Information Center), which was primarily designed as an internet platform and coordination point for safety-related problems in the alpine region. In 2002 he and his team received the ARGE-Alp Future Prize for this.

Werner Senn began his aviation training with the acquisition of a private pilot's license at the Flugsportzentrum Tirol in Innsbruck in 2002. After being appointed head of Department II / 7 at the Federal Ministry of the Interior in Vienna on December 1, 2005 and being appointed Ministerialrat in 2006 he also completed the professional helicopter pilot training. His previous ministerial activities included, among others, the participation in the procurement of a new fleet of helicopters for the BMI , the modernization of the infrastructure of the air police, the introduction of the FLIR -Nachtflugbetriebes (Forward Looking Infrared) on three remote sites with NVG -Brillen (Night Vision Goggles ) and thermal imaging camera as well as the creation or construction of a flight operations center in Vienna-Schwechat . During his period of service, the termination of the agreements according to § 15a B-VG ( Federal Constitutional Law ) on joint helicopter service and the associated reorganization of air ambulance in Austria also fall . In this context, he also implemented the reintroduction of the 15a contract for civil protection and disaster control with the state of Tyrol, which led to the financing of a cooperation helicopter from the BMI and the Tyrolean state government.

Werner Senn also supported the journalistic processing of the history of the flight police. In 2015 - in collaboration with Stefanie Grüssl and Peter Weichselbaum - the work "Air Police in Austria, then and now" was created, and the following year, in collaboration with Stefanie Grüssl, a special stamp was implemented by Austrian Post to mark the 60th anniversary of the Air Police.

Special functions

Werner Senn is a court sworn expert for ski and snowboard accidents, air rescue and avalanche accidents. From 2005 to 2008 he was chairman of the Austrian Police Mountain Guides Association and Vice President of the Board of Trustees for Alpine Safety.

Athletic career

As part of the white water paddling sport and as a member of the TWV Innsbruck , Werner Senn achieved several Tyrolean championship titles from 1978 to 1981; In 1979 he won the International Sanna Race. From 1980 to 1986 he was a participant in professional skiing world championships and in 1990 he was the winner of the World Championships of Endurance Skiing in Aspen.
