Westerwiehe is located in the north-east of North Rhine-Westphalia and is one of seven districts of the city of Rietberg . It was part of the County of Rietberg, founded in 1237 .
With its 2,414 inhabitants, it is the third smallest of the seven districts of Rietberg.
Westerwiehe lies on the edge of the nature reserve Rietberger Emsniederung and Steinhorster Becken , north of the river Ems .
On January 1, 1970, Westerwiehe was incorporated into the city of Rietberg.
