history

Plaque at the entrance to the cemetery

Neuenkirchen was first mentioned in a document in 1185 as nyen kerken . The branch of the Carolingian parish in Wiedenbrück received the parish church of St. Margareta in the 13th century , which is the oldest monument in the city of Rietberg.

Since Neuenkirchen was in earlier times on an important post route and was also the seat of the synagogue of the County of Rietberg , the place was of great importance within the old county. In the 18th century, Neuenkirchen developed into a location for trade and handicrafts within the county.

Until 1836 Neuenkirchen was the official seat of a rural community in the northern part of the county, but this official seat had to be handed over to Verl .

Neuenkirchen has a large number of old Jewish monuments and buildings, for example the old Jewish cemetery or the Kemper House. On the site of the Neuenkirchen Synagogue , which was destroyed by the National Socialists in 1938 , a memorial today commemorates the Jewish past of the place.

On January 1, 1970, Neuenkirchen was incorporated into the city of Rietberg.

The Neuenkirchen coat of arms shows the parish church of St. Margareta, which can be found in the coats of arms of numerous Neuenkirchen clubs. Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Road traffic

The state road 782 running through Neuenkirchen connects the town to the B 64 south-west of Rietberg . The closest connection to the A 2 is via the Gütersloh junction, around 7.5 km away.

Transportation

There is no rail link in Neuenkirchen; the nearest train stations are in Gütersloh and Rheda-Wiedenbrück . Neuenkirchen is located in the area covered by the “Der Sechser” collective tariff of OWL Verkehr GmbH and is connected to the cities of Gütersloh and Bielefeld via lines 77 and 80 .

Air traffic

The nearest airport is Paderborn / Lippstadt Airport in Büren, around 50 km away . Both the Dortmund airport and the Münster / Osnabrück Airport are about 75 km away. Civil use of Gütersloh Airport is not possible.

Established businesses

For many centuries Neuenkirchen was shaped by agriculture. The first manufacturing companies did not grow until the beginning of industrialization. Until a few years ago, the place still owned a regionally important dairy cooperative, which has now been dissolved.

In Neuenkirchen, people find work in wood and metal processing companies. However, due to the proximity of the large industrial locations Bielefeld and Gütersloh , the place has more of the character of a residential area. The baking machine factory Emil Kemper GmbH , which belonged to the Neuenkirchen Kemper family from 1898 until its illegal Aryanization in 1935 and then again from 1954 to 1990, is of supraregional importance . Today the company is part of the HorstmannGroup .

In addition, there is a branch of the Lear Corporation , a manufacturer of automotive parts , in Neuenkirchen . This branch is now the largest employer in the city of Rietberg.

Public facilities

Neuenkirchen has its own fire brigade , one of three fire engines within the Rietberg city area. The extinguishing district of the fire brigade, which has around 50 members, includes Neuenkirchen as well as the districts of Varensell and Druffel. The establishment of the volunteer fire brigade dates back to 1883 after 18 buildings in the town center had been destroyed by a large fire three years earlier.

After the Neuenkirchen St. Margareten Hospital was converted into a nursing home in 1981, such a facility no longer exists in the town. This means that the closest hospitals, mainly those in Rheda-Wiedenbrück and Gütersloh, must be used.

education

The place has a primary school and a special school, all other types of school, except for a secondary school, can be found in neighboring Rietberg. The secondary school is located in Mastholte. In addition, there are five kindergartens in Neuenkirchen.

Culture and sights

Catholic parish church of St. Margareta

Buildings

Parish Church of St. Margareta

The parish church of St. Margareta in the center of the village was built after the collapse of the old church tower in 1803 and, like the parish, belongs to the pastoral association of the Neuenkirchen parish in the Rietberg-Wiedenbrück deanery of the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

mosque

In the south of the village is the Rietberg Merkez Camii ( Central Mosque Rietberg) of the Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institute for Religion (DİTİB). The Islamic place of prayer was opened in 2002 and is one of the few mosques in East Westphalia-Lippe with a 12 meter high minaret .

cenotaph

cenotaph

Opposite the village square at the old elementary school there is a war memorial, which was first unveiled in 1927 on the corner of Lange Strasse and Westerwieher Strasse to commemorate those who died in the First World War . The first restoration of the stone was carried out in 1953, in 1963 it was moved to its current location and the names of soldiers who died in World War II were added. Another restoration of the memorial took place in 2010.

Old elementary school

The old elementary school in front of the village square is the former Neuenkirchen school building, which was occupied in 1908 and initially consisted of six classrooms and three living rooms for the teaching staff. A further six classrooms were added in 1955. Until 1973, the old elementary school served as a primary and secondary school and was subsequently only used as a primary school.

Since the construction of the new primary school building in 1988, the building has had no other function as a teaching facility and served as temporary accommodation for asylum seekers in the following years . Since the completion of renovation work in 2001 and 2002, the old elementary school has been used by the Heimatverein.

Village ditch

The village ditch, which has existed since 1831 and was built before the Neuenkirchen fire brigade was established for the purpose of supplying extinguishing water , runs through the town center . To the east of the town center, the Wapel was dammed up for this purpose, the ditch branches off immediately in front of it as an overflow and in this way always carries water. The village moat became an important facility for the extinguishing water supply in the village, which considerably shortened the long waterway to the natural flowing waters, which are up to a kilometer away. Although the village moat is now partially piped, in some places it is still visible today.

Parks

In the south of the village, Neuenkirchen has a share in the Rietberger Gartenschaupark, the area of which was laid out as Neuer Park Neuenkirchen as part of the 2008 State Horticultural Show . The first open-air organ in Germany, built by the Rietberg-based company Speith-Orgelbau , was installed there in 2010 .

The new park, Stadler's Garden , was opened in 2017 . Another small park is located in the center of the village behind the Kolping House.

Natural monuments and nature reserves

To the west of the village is the Schellenwiese wet meadow reserve , which extends to the Druffel settlement area .

Regular events

The annual events include the May Fair, which is held on the first weekend in May, and the four-day shooting festival , which takes place every year on the second weekend in July. Other events in the annual calendar are the wine festival in September and the Christmas market on the second Advent. Meetings take place in Neuenkirchen during carnival time, but there is no street carnival. However, the Neuenkirchen clubs take part in the parades in neighboring Rietberg.

In addition, regular open-air events take place in the Volksbank-Arena in the Neuenkirchen part of the garden show park during the summer months .
