The Viennese FC 1898 had its roots in the German-Austrian gymnastics club founded in 1887 and was founded in 1897 as a football section within the gymnastics club. In the founding year, the footballers appeared under this name in the Challenge Cup and were even able to advance into the final. The official split from the parent club probably took place at the beginning of 1898 and this year was also reflected in the club name. Why the football club started in 1897 under the name Wiener FC 1898 can no longer be determined today. In records and newspaper reports from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the club has a wide variety of names. Most of the time, the WFC was dubbed the “Football Club of 98”, FC 98 Vienna or the Vienna FC of 1898.

The Jewish roots

The roots of the German-Austrian Gymnastics Club itself lie in the First Viennese Gymnastics Club in 1861 . The head turnaround of the then TV 1861, Franz Xaver Kießling (1859-1940), applied in 1887 for the introduction of a passage later called the Aryan paragraph into the association's statutes, which excluded all non-German members from the association. The first Viennese gymnastics club had a total of 1,100 members, 480 Jews and 20 other non-Germans. Due to the amendment of the Association Act, only Germans of “Aryan” descent were allowed to belong to the First Vienna Gymnastics Club.

The so-called Aryan paragraph was soon included in the statutes of other associations, and so from the 1880s onwards, with the simultaneous growing Jewish national consciousness, both assimilation-ready and Zionist and Jewish-national groups increasingly formed associations of Jewish fellow citizens. The now excluded Jewish members of TV 1861 also founded their own club in the same year with the German-Austrian gymnastics club.

Challenge Cup and Tagblatt Cup

In the Challenge Cup , which was held for the first time, Vienna's FC 1898 defeated their rivals RC Training Vienna with 5-0 goals in the semifinals on November 14, 1897 and surprisingly made it into the final. The final was played on November 21, 1897 on the forest meadow in Vienna's Prater and ended with a superior 7-0 victory for the Vienna Cricket and Football Club , whose team consisted almost entirely of British . In the following seasons, the WFC 1898 reached the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup, but failed in 1898/99 at AC Victoria Vienna and in 1899/1900 at First Vienna FC 1894 Vienna with 1: 3.

The Austrian Football Union organized a championship for the first time in the 1900/01 season. Due to its skill level and its success in the Challenge Cup, the Vienna FC 1898 was divided into the first class by the association, together with the First Vienna FC 1894 , Vienna Cricket and Football Club , AC Viktoria Wien and the Vienna AC , around the so-called Viennese Tagblatt Cup played. The WFC struggled with player shortages throughout the season, finishing fourth in their first six-day season with four points. In the Challenge Cup, the WFC lost in the quarter-finals to the eventual winner, Vienna AC.

The 1901/02 season began for the WFC, however, with a good debut in the Wiener Tagblatt-Pokal in the form of a 1-1 draw at the newly promoted Hernalser FuAC Vorwärts . In the further course of the season there were further draws against the absolute top clubs First Vienna FC and Wiener AC. The highest victories were recorded with 4-0 against Graphia and 3-0 against Hernals. However, the club again had to struggle with a shortage of players this season and could not play in the spring of 1902 for the two games against Vienna AC and one encounter against Graphia. Ultimately, the Vienna FC 1898 only finished third behind the winners Wiener AC and Vienna. The WFC was not allowed to compete in the Challenge Cup this season because all Viennese clubs were removed from the competition by the organizer Vienna Cricket and Football Club.

In the Tagblatt Cup, the WFC reached third place again in its final 1902/03 season, but could only score a single point from the games against the top clubs in the league (1-1 against Vienna). Negative highlights of the WFC were the 1:10 and 0: 6 defeats against the eventual winner Wiener AC and a 1: 4 defeat against the Cricketers. In the Challenge Cup they reached the semi-finals again, but were eliminated with 0: 5 against the Vienna AC. At the end of the 1902/03 season, the game was discontinued due to a lack of sporting prospects and the constant lack of players and the club was dissolved.
