Johann Wilhelm Friedrich Hezel (also von Hezel ; born May 16, 1754 in Königsberg in Franconia ; † June 12, 1824 in Dorpat ) was a German orientalist , theologian and university professor .

Life

Hezel was the son of the second pastor of Königsberg. He began studying theology at the University of Jena in 1772 and was already working there as a private tutor. In 1775 he became a private tutor in Hohenstein near Coburg. There he preached in the castle chapel, although he was not a clergyman. In the same year he was awarded a Dr. phil. doctorate and began shortly after as a lecturer to teach there. In 1776 he was awarded the title of court councilor by the Duke of Saxony-Hildburghausen . He retired to Ilmenau for further scientific work . On June 14, 1778, Prince Ludwig Günther II of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt awarded him the honor of the Court Palatinate . In 1780 he bought the Grenzhammer estate near Ilmenau, where he wrote his The Bible Old and New Testaments with complete explanatory notes . He also became an honorary member of the Latin Society of Jena that year .

Hezel participated in the May 3, 1786 the reputation as a full professor of Oriental literature at the University of Giessen in 1788, he was also Hessischer Privy Councilor , 1793 Rector of the University and finally in 1800 the librarian. In 1791 he was appointed first class member of the corresponding literary society in Mainz and in 1793 he was appointed definitor of the spiritual consistory in Giessen.

On September 13, 1801, Hezel accepted a full professorship in exegesis and oriental languages ​​at the University of Dorpat . There he was also appointed Imperial Councilor of Russia. In 1805 he was awarded a doctorate in theology , in 1820 he was also appointed to the councilor in Dorpat.

He was married to Charlotte von Hezel . One daughter was married to the law professor Christian Heinrich Gottlieb Köchy . The grandson Wilhelm Köchy arose from the marriage .
