Joseph Wilhelm Sutor (* 1774 in Edelstetten , Swabia ; † September 7, 1828 in Linden near Hanover ) was a German opera singer (tenor), conductor , composer , conductor , choirmaster and concert master . He composed, for example, the incidental music for Shakespeare's Macbeth , and left behind operas , oratorios and cantatas .

Life

Wilhelm Sutor grew up as the son of a choir singer who worked at the Munich Liebfrauenkirche . He studied singing with Johann Evangelist Valesi , who was also active in Munich at the time and with whom Carl Maria von Weber was one of his fellow students . In addition, Sutor also studied music theory and composition.

Sutor got his first job with Joseph von Stubenberg , the last prince-bishop of the Eichstätt diocese . In 1806 Sutor moved to the court theater in Stuttgart , where he worked as a singer, conductor and composer. As a Stuttgart "Capellmeister" Wilhelm Sutor applied on September 7, 1816 for a position at the Morettisches Opera House in Dresden . However, since Sutor was said to have “no outstanding performance at all, but some dubious character traits”, Carl Maria von Weber was finally given the Dresden position.

In 1817 Sutor went to Hanover; However, the royal seat of the former Electorate of Hanover, which had been elevated to the Kingdom of Hanover by the Congress of Vienna a few years earlier, lacked the presence of the sovereign with his court due to the ongoing personal union between Great Britain and Hanover . In 1817 Sutor succeeded Anton Lüders (1770–1823) as orchestra director in Hanover . On January 2, 1818, Sutor received the position of Royal Hanoverian and British Court Kapellmeister; Until his death he worked in this position in the Hanoverian castle opera house at the Leineschloss .
