Wilhelm Wengler

Wilhelm Wengler (born June 12, 1907 in Wiesbaden ; † July 31, 1995 in Berlin ) was a German legal scholar and professor at the Free University of Berlin .

Life

Wengler studied law at the University of Frankfurt am Main and received his doctorate there as a student of Hans Lewald in 1931, both as a Dr. iur. as well as Dr. rer. pole. In the years 1933–34 he was an assistant, from 1935 lecturer at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Foreign and International Private Law (under Ernst Rabel ) and its sister institute for Foreign Public Law and International Law (Bruns). After his arrest by the Gestapo , he was released without notice by the Kaiser Wilhelm Society in February 1944 .

After the war, Wengler completed his habilitation in 1948 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1949 on he was full professor for international and foreign law, comparative law and general legal theory at the Free University of Berlin and from 1950 until his retirement in 1975 he was director of the institute for international and foreign law and comparative law there. The institute's excellent library, which he built, was considered to be the best legal library of its kind in Europe.

Wengler researched and published in a number of areas, namely international law, German and foreign public law as well as private international law.

He was one of the last German law professors to be authorized to teach international law as well as private international law. Wengler's pen includes “Völkerrecht” (two volumes, published 1964) and “Internationales Privatrecht” (also two volumes, published 1981) basic works on both areas of law.

Wengler was a member of the Institut de Droit international and its president from 1973 to 1975.

The universities of Thessaloniki (1972), Leuven (1978) and Coimbra (1981) awarded him honorary doctorates for his scientific achievements .

A two-volume festschrift was published for Wengler's 65th birthday.

Wengler's private library was transferred to the Käthe und Wilhelm Wengler Foundation after his death . The library comprises around 9,000 volumes (this corresponds to approx. 243 meters of shelf space) with a focus on private international law, international law and comparative law. Today it is on permanent loan to the Law Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin.
