William Theophilus Dortch

William Theophilus Dortch (born August 23, 1824 in Rocky Mount , North Carolina , †  November 21, 1889 in Goldsboro , North Carolina) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He represented the state of North Carolina during the Civil War as a senator in the Confederate Congress .

Dortch was already politically active in his home state before the outbreak of civil war. From 1852 he was a member of the legislature of North Carolina ( General Assembly ), where he also served a term as Speaker of the House of Representatives .

After the war began, Dortch was elected to represent North Carolina in the first Confederate Congress in 1861 ; He was also a member of the second Congress during its entire session until the defeat of the Confederation on May 10, 1865. During his tenure as a senator, he was investigated for an alleged relationship with a minor; the investigation found him innocent.

Even after the war, William Dortch was politically active again. In 1876 he served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention . He was a member of the North Carolina Senate from 1879 to 1885 .
