The Windsor Park is a multi-purpose stadium in Roseau , Dominica . It is used for cricket and soccer . In addition, national and cultural events such as the World Creole Music Festival , the Calypso competitions and the Miss Dominica election take place.
The 12,000-seat stadium is located east of downtown Roseau. It complies with the standards of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
history
The former garbage dump area served as a site for a wide variety of activities, such as carnival, horse and donkey races or parades, before it was built. The plan for a national stadium at this location was drawn up in 1999. However, the existing structure was so bad that all buildings had to be completely rebuilt. Work finally began on March 23, 2005.
The first anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and Dominica was chosen because China, in accordance with its commitment to support four special measures in Dominica ("Four Pillar Projects"), bought the stadium with a value of EC $ 33 million ( US $ 17 million) Dominica donated.
The work was completed on February 7, 2007. On March 23, 2007, Chinese politicians handed over the stadium to the Dominican government. The grand opening finally took place on October 24, 2007. The first event followed from October 25 to 27, 2007. It was the 11th World Creole Music Festival (WCMF).
Sporting events
The first soccer match came on February 6, 2008. The qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup between the Dominican team and Barbados ended 1-1 in front of 4200 spectators.
On July 26 and 28, 2009, the stadium hosted the first two cricket one-day international matches in Dominica. The West Indies met Bangladesh .
The first cricket test match to be held in Dominica took place between the West Indies and India from July 6-10, 2011.
