The Bangladeshi national cricket team is the national cricket team that represents Bangladesh at the international level. She has been the tenth full member of the International Cricket Council since 2000 and has as a result test status .

history

The years as an Associate Member of the ICC

Bangladesh was part of India until 1947 and then of Pakistan until 1971, so that it had test status as part of these states at that time. After independence, the team had to regroup. In 1977, Bangladesh was granted Associate Member status in the International Cricket Council, the second tier of national cricket teams. In 1979 the team took part in its first competition when it failed in the preliminary round of the ICC Trophy and thus could not qualify for the Cricket World Cup 1979 . In the following years the focus was on the Asia Cup, where it participated regularly and got the opportunity to gain experience against India , Pakistan and Sri Lanka . In the further editions of the qualification for the Cricket World Cup, the team failed partly clearly. Only in 1982 and 1990 the team managed to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament before being eliminated by Zimbabwe . The team won the ICC Trophy 1997 in Malaysia for the first time and was able to qualify for the 1999 Cricket World Cup in England . There the team could not qualify for the second round. However, they managed to win against Scotland and Pakistan , the latter being seen as a sensation. As a result, the team was given full member status the following year.

Testing

The team carried out the first test against India in November 2000, but they lost. In general, since it was granted test status, Bangladesh has only been able to win a few games in test format: in addition to several victories against Zimbabwe , the first in 2005, two wins against the West Indies in July 2009 . An improvement from 2016 resulted in a win against England and Sri Lanka . In 2018, the series win against the West Indies could be repeated.

One Day Internationals

After the ICC KnockOut 1998 hosted it, but was not yet allowed to participate due to a lack of test status at that time, the participation in the ICC KnockOut 2000 was the first in the second most important tournament in the ODI area. However, they lost in the pre-qualification against England . Even in the following edition, the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 , there was no victory. The 2003 Cricket World Cup in South Africa was the next significant setback for the team. It could not win any of the preliminary round games and even lost with Canada and Kenya against teams that had no test status. Also in the preliminary round they failed with the editions of the ICC Champions Trophy 2004 and 2006 .

Things went better at the 2007 Cricket World Cup . In addition to the victory in the preliminary round against Bermuda, a surprise victory against India and later in the Super 8 round against South Africa . There, however, the team retired as the penultimate. In the previous edition of the Cricket World Cup was Bangladesh besides India and Sri Lanka for the visitors. In the tournament, despite a win against England , the team was eliminated in the preliminary round due to a poor net run rate against the West Indies .

The team achieved a surprise success at the 2012 Asia Cup held in their own country . There they were able to advance to the final for the first time, where they only narrowly lost with 2 runs against Pakistan .

At the Cricket World Cup 2015 , the team managed to eliminate England in the preliminary round and advance to the quarter-finals. There they lost to India with 109 runs. At the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 they managed to leave Australia and New Zealand behind in the preliminary round and advance to the semi-finals. There the team failed with 9 wickets against India.

At the Cricket World Cup 2019 you could achieve three wins (against South Africa, West Indies and Afghanistan), but only came eighth in the preliminary round and were eliminated.

Twenty20

The first ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 in South Africa made it into the second round by beating the West Indies . The other editions in 2009 , 2010 and 2012 were eliminated in the preliminary round. In the 2014 edition , after the introduction of a new tournament format, you could qualify for the Super 10, but lost all games there. At the Asia Cup 2016 , Bangladesh once again made it into the final, where they lost to India with 8 wickets.
