history

Before joining the ICC

The first recorded game of cricket took place in Alloa in 1785. The first full international game was played in the oval against Surrey in 1865 . Organizationally, however, there were initially problems, as the first Scottish Cricket Union, which was founded in 1879, had to be dissolved four years later for financial reasons. In the remainder of the 19th century, games against Australia and Ireland were initially played . Before the Second World War, the first games against New Zealand and India took place. The first most important development for Scottish cricket after World War II was its incorporation into the English national cricket competitions. In 1980 Scotland took part in the Benson & Hedges Cup for the first time , and from 1983 also in the NatWest Trophy . In 1992, Scotland applied for ICC membership , which was granted in 1994.

List A and One-Day Internationals

The first participation in the World Championship qualification was possible at the 1997 ICC Trophy . Scotland finished third behind Bangladesh and Kenya and qualified for the 1999 Cricket World Cup in England. In this, however, the team did not succeed and so they were eliminated in the preliminary round. In the following ICC Trophy in 2001 you lost the decisive game against Canada and could therefore not qualify for the 2003 World Cup. At the 2005 ICC Trophy , the team won the final against hosts Ireland and was able to qualify for the World Cricket Championship . But there, too, all games in the preliminary round were lost. In the subsequent qualification in 2009 , the team already failed in the Super 8 round and ultimately took sixth place, but was at least able to secure the status of a one-day international team. To qualify for the 2015 World Cup , Scotland played the ICC World Cricket League Championship , but only reached fifth place. However , they were able to win the final qualifying tournament and still qualify for the final tournament. In this, however, they were eliminated without a win after the preliminary round. The qualifying tournament for the Cricket World Cup 2019 looked good for a long time for the team, but since they lost their last two games against Ireland and the West Indies , they ultimately failed to qualify.

Twenty20

At the first ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 , Scotland took part, eliminated in the preliminary round after a loss to Pakistan and a no result against India. In qualifying for the next tournament , the team reached third place, which was sufficient to qualify for the main tournament due to the withdrawal of Zimbabwe . But even there they lost both preliminary round games, this time against South Africa and New Zealand and thus eliminated from the tournament early. Scotland failed to qualify for the following qualifications in 2010 , 2012 and 2014 . It was not until the 2015 qualification that the team was able to qualify for the finals again . There the team was eliminated in the preliminary round.

First class cricket

Apart from encounters against tour teams such as Australia, Australia 'A' or New Zealand, and occasional comparisons with English first-class counties or the MCC , Scotland has played a first-class match against Ireland almost every year since 1909. This only changed in 2004, when both teams regularly take part in the ICC Intercontinental Cup , which was then launched . The team was also able to win its first edition in 2004. In the following years, the team could not qualify for the final. It was not until the 2009-2010 edition that she was able to reach the final again, which she lost to Afghanistan . In the 2011–13 edition , the team took third place.
