Winterset is a city (with the status " City ") and the administrative seat of Madison County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 Winterset had 5190 inhabitants, the number of which had decreased to 5094 by 2013.
Winterset is part of the metropolitan area around Iowa's capital Des Moines .

Landmark
Winterset is well known for its covered bridges. There are a total of seven of these bridges in Madison County, including one in Winterset City Park. The annual "Covered Bridge Festival" celebrates the bridges and the genetic material every second weekend in October. In 2006 the festival took place on October 14th and 15th.
Another well-known landmark is the "Clark Tower" in Winterset City Park, from which one has a breathtaking view over the Middle River Valley area.
The Madison County Court in the heart of the town square was built in 1868 and rebuilt in 1876 after a fire.

Winterset was first mapped in 1849. The Madison County Historical Society and Administration state the city was established that year again. Winterset's 150th city anniversary was celebrated in the summer of 1999. The families living in the city today as they did then are: Bilderback, Danforth, Guiberson, Gentry, Berthold, Tidrick, Pitzer, Gaff, Berger, Ruby, Hornback, Dougherty, Wilhoit, Walkup, McPherson, Wilkinson, Gaskill, Houk and Hutchings.
Historical objects
The Holliwell Covered Bridge, built in 1880, is located in Winterset . It has the status of a historic former covered road bridge and is located about 6.5 kilometers southeast of the city. The present pedestrian bridge was listed on August 28, 1976 by the National Register of Historic Places with the number 76000789 as a historic monument.

Famous residents
The actor John Wayne was born in Winterset in 1907. His birth name was Marion Robert Morrison. The Morrison family lived in the city until 1911. After 1911, the family moved to California because doctors said it would help the father get well.
George Washington Carver lived there in the mid-1880s and worked as a chef for a downtown hotel.
Fred Clarke , inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945 , was born in Winterset on October 3, 1872.
Henry JB Cummings , a US MP from Iowa and editor and owner of Winterset Madisonian (a newspaper).
