Wolf Burbat

Wolf Burbat (* 1946 in Bremen as Wolfgang Burbat ) is a German jazz musician ( flute , saxophone , synthesizer ) and composer . He taught at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Folkwang University of the Arts .

Live and act

After graduating from high school, Burbat first studied mathematics; he then worked as a research assistant at the University of Münster . In 1970 he performed with the Frankfurt Quartet for Improvisation at the German Jazz Festival . He then completed classical flute studies in Münster, but also took private jazz lessons with Dave Liebman , Bob Berg and Hal Galper in New York. During this time he led the jazz rock group Katamaran , with which he recorded three albums. He also worked as a theater musician (at the Berlin Theater des Westens ) and was involved in recordings of Maria Farantouri . He also worked with the Chromatic Fantastica and the Neue Musik Berlin group . From 1980 to 1992 he worked as a theory, arrangement and saxophone teacher at the University of the Arts in Berlin, where he played a key role in developing and building up the jazz course. He led a workshop at the Darmstadt Days for New Music . He wrote the standard work Die Harmonik des Jazz (first Oreos-Verlag 1988, later paperback edition ). From 1991 to 2012 he worked at the Folkwang University in Essen as professor for basic musical training and music theory in the areas of musical and jazz as well as ensemble management. From October 2000 to December 2002 he also held the position of Vice-Rector there .

As a composer, he initially wrote theater and radio play music, but since the 1990s has increasingly turned to chamber music.
