Wolfgang Laur

Wolfgang Laur (born December 1, 1921 in Riga ; † August 26, 2009 in Schleswig ) was a German philologist .

Life

Wolfgang Laur studied German and Nordic philology at the universities of Greifswald , Posen and Kiel and received his doctorate in Kiel in 1949 with the thesis Germanic sanctuaries in the Duchy of Schleswig as reflected in the place names and local legends . He then worked as a consultant for place and field name research at the Schleswig-Holstein Working Group for State and Ethnicity Research; from 1955 he headed the Volkshochschule Schleswig and from 1962 until his retirement he was a research assistant at the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives .

Laur's scientific interest focused in particular on researching localities , fields and bodies of water . His best-known work is the Historisches Ortnamelexikon von Schleswig-Holstein, the first edition of which was published in 1967 and the second edition in 1992. Laur's scientific legacy has now been fully indexed and is accessible via the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives.

Posthumously in 2012 his handbook The names of places and waters of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg was published .
