Wolfgang Schmid

biography

From 1958 Schmid sang with the Stuttgarter Hymnus-Chorknaben , from 1959 he learned guitar with Stephan Malek. From 1962 to 1970 he was guitarist, singer and band leader of the soul band "The Dynamites!". Between 1968 and 1972 he played bass with Seelow and was a sound engineer in the Jankowski studios in Stuttgart. From 1972 to 1977 he was bass player with Klaus Doldingers Passport (since 2001 again with Classic Passport ). Schmid then played with musicians like Bobby Stern from 1978 to 1980 for Head, Heart & Hands and from 1981 to 1986 for Wolfhound . Since 1987 he has played with Wolfgang Schmid's Kickand since 1996 with PARADOX with guitarist Bill Bickford and drummer Billy Cobham , besides in other groups with Joo Kraus and Peter Wölpl as well as with Thomas Langer and Daniel Messina ("The Beat Goes On!"). He continues to work as a studio musician (and can be heard on around 400 albums). From 1991 to 1996 he was chairman of the JazzMusikerInitiative München eV. Since December 14th, 2016 he has been Professor hc at the University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart .

His sometimes furious way of playing and stylistic diversity made Schmid a role model for many bass players in the funk and fusion scene . Schmid plays with both a plectrum and fingerpicking and often uses slapping for radio material. Alongside Hellmut Hattler and UFO Walter, he is one of the most outstanding and formative bass players in Germany. As a composer and producer, he is responsible for around 50 albums. He also gives workshops and master classes.

Since 2008 he has been supporting the "Rapsody - Heimat und Fremde" project in Stuttgart.

Honourings and prices

Schmid was named “Artist of the Year” ( German Phono Academy ) with Passport and is a bass poll winner in the United States (Int. Musician) and in the specialist journal Musikmagazin .
