Culture and sights

Buildings

  • The old Margaret Chapel was demolished in 1837. The current church was built in 1923.
  • The Goloring , a Celtic complex, is located near the village on a former military site. The Goloring is located on the municipal area of Kobern-Gondorf. In 2005 the Goloring Association was founded in the Goloring Hall in Wolken. The four surrounding communities, Kobern-Gondorf, Ochtendung, Bassenheim, Wolken and the district of Mayen-Koblenz take care of the presumed pre-Celtic henge complex (Goloring). Since 2005, Wolken has also called itself the “community on Goloring”, as Wolken is only a mile away from this facility. The community hall in Wolken has been called Goloring-Halle since 2005.
  • On the road to Polch, at the entrance to Wolken, there is a centuries-old oak tree (natural monument) and a small chapel. This place is also called the Iron Hand. However, it has nothing to do with the legendary Iron Hand of the knight Kuno on Hunsrückstrasse, but is named after the burnt down former inn with the same name and a dance hall from the end of the 18th century, which was last listed as a monument.
  • There is a nature reserve very close to the Goloring .

societies

  • The place has a choir "mezzoforte", which emerged from the men's choir founded in 1895.
  • There is a fair society that organizes the annual parade to the Margarethenkirmes including festivities.
  • A carnival club was founded in the 1990s.
  • The volunteer fire brigade has been using a fire station with a fire engine for many years . A youth fire brigade has been attached to it since the 1990s .
  • Since 2006 there has been a successful amateur soccer team called TuS Tülpes, which has won the village championship several times in a row and is also involved in other areas of the village (for example at the fair parade or setting up the fair tree).

Surroundings

  • From clouds you can reach the ascent to the Marienkapelle of the Karmelenberg past the Iron Hand .

Economy and Infrastructure

The former farming village is now a residential community close to the city. Considerable parts of the field are cultivated by farmers from other communities. At the beginning of the 1990s, a small industrial park emerged on the western edge of Wolken. This is home to a large bakery, a locksmith's shop and an agricultural engineering company that was established there as early as 1965 and that emerged from the village blacksmith's shop at the time.

traffic

The place is in close proximity to the A 48 exit Ochtendung and the A 61 with the exit Koblenz-Metternich . The state road L 52, which connects Koblenz with Polch, passes the village.

Wolken is the bus stop of bus line 380 between Koblenz and Polch, which, however, is only approached at long intervals.

However, a new operating company will give the line an improved, more extensive timetable on August 1, 2016, and thus better connections.

education

Wolken has had its own kindergarten for around 20 years. The Wolkener children attend primary school in Kobern-Gondorf . The Realschule plus für Wolken is also located in Kobern-Gondorf. The "former (elementary) school" is now used as a community hall. Sometimes events from the Rhein-Mosel adult education center also take place there. The previous school (former elementary school, called "old school" by the long-established population) was converted into a residential building when the former school was opened and closed in the 1950s. It used to be recognizable by an oversized cross (approx. 2 m high) on the front, today nothing reminds of the story. It's on Hauptstrasse, number 20.
