Xu Huaiwen , 徐怀雯, Xú Huáiwén, (born August 2, 1975 in Guiyang , Guizhou , China ) is a former German badminton player and coach of Chinese origin. With “Huaiwen Xu”, Xu himself prefers the German-adapted spelling of her name.
Career
From 1994 to 1996 she was third in the Chinese championships, from 1997 to 1998 she was a member of the Chinese national badminton team, where the 1.60 m tall right-handed woman seemed too small to those responsible and was ultimately no longer nominated. In 1998 she took part for the first time at an international tournament, the Thailand Open . From September 2000 she lived in Germany and first played for VfB Friedrichshafen in the Badminton Bundesliga . In that year she also won her first tournament, the BMW Open 2000. In 2003, Xu moved to 1. BC Bischmisheim and received German citizenship in November of the same year. She won her first title for Germany at the Finnish International and the Scottish Open in 2003. In 2004 she took part for Germany at the Summer Olympics in Athens , where she failed in the first round in just three sets against the later bronze medalist Zhou Mi from China. In 2004 and 2005 she became German champion in women's singles. At the World Championships in Anaheim in August 2005 , she won the first ever World Championship medal for the DBV as third in the women's singles . In the same year she won the Dutch Open .
At the start of 2006, on January 8th, she won the women's singles at the Swiss Open in Basel , the third most important European Grand Prix tournament. In the final, she faced Zhu Lin . On February 5, the successful defense followed and with it the third title in a row as German champion in women's singles in two sets (11: 2 and 11: 9) against Petra Overzier . On April 16, 2006, after 32 years, she managed to win another European championship title in the women's singles for the DBV. She won the final against the second of the Athens Olympic Games, Mia Audina . In the weekly updated world rankings from June 22, 2006 she was the first player in the history of the DBV to take first place. At the Badminton Individual World Cup, Xu reached the semi-finals in Madrid in 2006 , but lost there against Xie Xingfang from the People's Republic of China. On October 29, 2006, Huaiwen Xu won the final in the women's singles of the Bitburger Open , a 2 * Grand Prix tournament, for the fourth time in a row .
On the first weekend in February 2007, Xu successfully defended the title of German champion in women's singles against Juliane Schenk . Together with the team she also successfully defended the title of German badminton champion with the 1st BC Bischmisheim. At the end of October 2007 she switched from Babolat to Yonex for the club brand .
In 2008 she won the German championship in women's singles again. There was also a third place in the European team championship (European qualification for the Uber Cup finals ). The 2008 Korea Open made it to the quarterfinals. At the All England and the Badminton Swiss Open , she reached the semifinals. She also successfully defended her title as European champion in women's singles. In July 2008, Huaiwen Xu won the women's singles final against Juliane Schenk at the Russian International White Nights 2008 . At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , where she was placed 7th, she met Finnish player Anu Nieminen in the first round , who she defeated in two sets. In the second round, Xu was able to prevail in two sets with 21:10 and 21: 7 against the British Tracey Hallam . In the quarter-finals she lost in two sets with 21:19 and 22:20 against Xie Xingfang, who was number 1 and who was number one in the world. This made her the first starter to play for the DBV who reached a quarter-finals at the Olympic Games. Xu announced in February 2009 that she would end her career in smaller tournaments in the course of 2009, with motivation problems being the main reason for retreating into private life. It then turned out that it was health problems (knees) that led to the end of the career. The last games were the Badminton Swiss Open 2009 in Basel, the successful defense of the team championship with the 1st BC Bischmisheim and the placement game in the final round of the Sudirman Cup in Guangzhou against France on May 13, 2009.
On July 1, 2009, she and her husband went to Seattle to begin studying. She also coached The Bellevue Badminton Club in Bellevue near Seattle.
On February 17, 2011, the Dutch Badminton Association (Nederlands Badminton Bond) announced on its website that Huaiwen Xu will get a contract as Dutch national coach from April 1, 2011 to December 31, 2012 (the position was advertised internationally). After work for NBB was over, Huaiwen Xu moved to Glasgow and trains the national youth team of Scotland there .

Her mother was active in the sport of basketball as a player and trainer. Xu's father did the same in volleyball .
