Ylikiiminki [ ˈylikiːmiŋki ] (Swedish historically Överkiminge ) is a former municipality with around 3,400 inhabitants in northern Finland. It is located around 35 km northeast of the city of Oulu on the central reaches of the Kiiminkijoki River . Only Finnish is spoken in the community.

On January 1, 2009, it was incorporated into the city of Oulu, the area of which more than tripled.

In addition to the eponymous church village (Finnish kirkonkylä ) Ylikiiminki, the municipality includes the following places:

Alavuotto, Arkala, Häikiönniemi, Jokela, Jokikokko, Jolos, Juopuli, Karahka, Kääriänperä, Lamu, Murtomaa, Niemikylä, Nuoritta, Rekikylä, Somerovaara, Säävälä, Ukkolanmäki, Ukonkangas, Vala, Vepsotto. By far the largest part of the municipality is forested; some lakes, torrents and rivers add to the charm of the landscape.

The place Ylikiiminki was created in the 16th century by the settlement of Finnish settlers from the eastern Finnish landscape of Savo. In the nearby village of Vesala, which is also part of the municipality today, the Finnish mercenary Pekka Vesainen, who is still sung in many stories today, settled in around 1560, who undertook military expeditions to Karelia from here during the smoldering conflict between Sweden and Russia from 1570–1595. A monument erected in Vesala in 1936 commemorates him. One of the sights of Ylikiiminki is still the wooden church built in 1788 according to plans by Jacob Rijf .

Ylikiiminki existed from 1867 as an independent municipality.
