Yosvany Terry (* 1972 in Camagüey ) is a Cuban jazz musician ( saxophone , percussion , Shékere , composition ).

Live and act

Yosvany Terry first had lessons from his father, the shékeres player and violinist Eladio "Don Pancho" Terry, leader of the charangaband Orquesta Maravillas de Florida . He attended the National Art School ENA and the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory . In Cuba he played with musicians such as Chucho Valdés , Silvio Rodríguez , Fito Páez and the band Cubanismo , with whom the first recordings were made in 1996. He also founded the formation Columna B. with other young musicians , with whom he went on international tours through the United States and Europe. a. with an appearance at the Stanford Jazz Festival in 1998. The following year he moved to New York and worked in the local jazz scene, a. a. with Roy Hargrove , Steve Coleman , Eddie Palmieri , Dave Douglas , Jeff Tain Watts , Horacio Hernández and bassist Avishai Cohen .

In 2000 Terry recorded his debut album Twisted Noon , followed by Metamorphosis (2004), on which u. a. Avishai Cohen, Luis Perdomo , Mike Moreno and James Genus contributed. In his own music he combines American jazz traditions with Afro-Cuban influences. In the field of jazz he was involved in 38 recording sessions between 1996 and 2014. a. with Jane Bunnett , Eric Revis , Dafnis Prieto , Kip Hanrahan , Arturo O'Farrill , Gonzalo Rubalcaba , Jason Lindner , Enrico Pieranunzi and Brian Lynch . In 2015 he received the $ 275,000 Doris Duke Jazz Award; in addition, his album New Throned King was nominated for the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album .
