Yuri Fyodorovich Fajer

Yuri Fedorovich Fajer (also Yuri Faier or Yuri Fayer , Russian Юрий Фёдорович Файер * 5; . Jul / 17th January  1890 . Greg in Kiev , † 3. August 1971 in Moscow ) was a Russian ballet - Conductor .

Live and act

After Fajer had attended the music school in his native Kiev until 1906, he learned to play the violin at the Moscow Conservatory with Georgi Nikolajewitsch Dulow. At the same time he began performing as a violinist and concertmaster with various orchestras. From 1909 to 1910 he was concertmaster and conductor at the Riga Opera . From 1914 to 1915 he was a member of the Simin Opera Orchestra in Moscow.

From 1916 he conducted for the Bolshoi Theater , starting with the ballet Coppélia . From 1923 to 1963 he was chief conductor of the ballet performances at the Bolshoi Theater. With the Bolshoi Ballet he traveled to France, England, the USA and Belgium to perform. His repertoire included more than 50 classical and contemporary ballet pieces. He worked closely with composers such as Reinhold Glières ( The Red Poppy ) and Sergei Prokofjew ( Cinderella ), some of whom had their works performed for the first time at the Bolshoi Theater.

Several phonograms with orchestral recordings in which Fajer was the conductor have been released. These include recordings of The Red Poppy , Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and Théophile Gautier's Giselle . Fajer was also involved in film productions. He conducted the recordings for Paul Czinner's documentary music film Bolshoi Ballet (1957), which focuses on a guest appearance by the ballet in London. Together with his long-time assistant Gennadi Roschdestwenski , Fajer received an Oscar nomination for this in the Music category (Scoring of a Musical Picture) in 1959 .

Fajer was named People's Artist of the USSR in 1951 and was awarded the Stalin Prize four times (1941, 1946, 1947 and 1950). He died in Moscow in 1971.
