Zara Anne Elizabeth Phillips , also known as Mrs. Michael Tindall since her wedding on official occasions , MBE , (born May 15, 1981 in London ) is a British show jumper and the daughter of Princess Anne and her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips . She is currently 18th in line to the British throne . She is an internationally successful eventing rider . In sport, she competes under the name Zara Tindall .

She and her older brother Peter are Elizabeth II's first grandchildren , but they do not have titles of nobility. However, they take part in official events and can then also be seen on the balcony of Buckingham Palace . Her relationship with her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, is considered to be extraordinarily close. She is often treated as a favorite grandchild by the press.

Life

Zara Phillips was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington , London , and was baptized on July 27, 1981. Her uncle Charles, Prince of Wales , was allowed to choose her name. Her godparents were Prince Andrew , Leonora Anson, Countess of Lichfield, Helen Stewart (wife of the racing driver Jackie Stewart ), Andrew Parker Bowles (then husband of today's Duchess of Cornwall ) and Hugh Thoma. She attended the Port Regis Prep School in Dorset and the Gordonstoun School in Scotland .

Zara Phillips has been married to Mike Tindall since July 30, 2011 . Tindall is a professional rugby union player and was a member of England's national team , which won the world title in 2003. She lives with Tindall in Gloucestershire . The wedding took place at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh , Scotland . Although she is known by her maiden name for professional purposes even after the wedding, she has officially adopted her husband's surname. Before that, she was in a relationship with jockey Richard Johnson from 1998 to 2003, with whom she also lived.

On July 8, 2013, Buckingham Palace announced the first pregnancy of Zara Phillips. Their daughter Mia Grace was born on January 17, 2014. In late 2016, Zara Phillips suffered a miscarriage. A new pregnancy was announced at the beginning of 2018. On June 18, 2018, their second daughter Lena Elizabeth Tindall was born.

Equestrian sport

At the University of Exeter , Phillips was trained as a physiotherapist specializing in horses. Her horse Toytown suffered a leg injury in the winter of 2003; therefore it was not possible for Phillips to participate in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . In September 2005, she won the European Championship title as an eventing rider in both individual competitions and with the British team. She followed in the footsteps of her mother, who was also European champion (individual).

At the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Phillips won the individual gold medal and the silver medal with the team. She was then voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year by the BBC , Sportsman of the Year in Great Britain. British television viewers voted in this election.

In 2008 it was set up for the Olympic Games in Beijing. In June 2008, however, she had to withdraw her participation because Toytown was injured again. In the autumn of 2008, she fell at an international tournament in Pau, France, and broke her collarbone . Her mare, Tsunami II , was put to sleep because of a fractured cervical vertebra.

In the run-up to the Olympic Games in London , Phillips carried the Olympic flame as the last “runner” on the fifth day of the Olympic torch relay , riding on her former successful horse Toytown. She won the silver medal in the team standings with High Kingdom and the British team . Phillips received the silver medal from her mother, Princess Anne .

At the World Equestrian Games in 2014 , Phillips again represented Great Britain with High Kingdom and won the silver medal with the team, in the individual ranking she was tenth. In April 2017, now starting under the name Zara Tindall, she was third in Lexington's four-star event with High Kingdom .

In 2007 she was named Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to equestrian sport .
