The Zeisehallen are a historical building complex in Hamburg-Ottensen , which was originally built as a factory for the manufacture of ship propellers and which is now used as an event and cultural center.

history

Ship propeller factory

The Zeisehallen were built as workshops for the Zeise ship propeller factory. The northern hall and the administration building were planned by the architect F. Beyerstedt, construction began in 1882, a major expansion followed in 1898. In 1901, the southern hall planned by the architects Schaar & Hinzpeter was added to the facility. Parts of the buildings were given a new brick facade in 1923, war damage was repaired from 1948 to 1950.

The crisis in shipbuilding led to the fact that the Zeise factory went bankrupt in 1979 and the halls were empty for several years and fell into disrepair.

Media and cultural center

The concept of a film and media center was worked out for the new use and extensive renovations began in 1985, the last sections of which were not completed until 1993. The northern hall received a restaurant and facilities for film and theater, the southern hall was converted into a passage with shops, a cinema and offices. The former Plant II kept its characteristic brick facade, was extended and converted for companies in the media industry and gastronomic use.

The former industrial use is remembered in many places, for example through deliberately unrefurbished masonry, remains of a bridge crane , a chimney torso and one of the screw molds set into the floor.

Today the Zeisehallen houses the zeise kinos , the Institute for Theater, Music Theater and Film of the University of Hamburg, the Hamburg Film School, film technology companies, media companies, film production companies and rental companies, two book publishers, a bookstore, a daycare center, as well as small galleries and several shops and restaurants.
