The journal for ethnology is the journal of two scientific societies, the German Society for Social and Cultural Anthropology (DGSKA) and the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory . It was founded in 1869 by Adolf Bastian and Robert Hartmann .

The older editions not only reflect the ups and downs in German ethnology , they are also a mirror of international ethnology. Scientists like Franz Boas (19 articles), Bruno Gutmann , Carl Strehlow , Sture Lagercrantz , Leo Frobenius , Carl Meinhof , Günter Wagner , Wilhelm E. Mühlmann , Adolf Bastian , Georg Schweinfurth , Rudolf Virchow , Hermann Baumann , Robert H. Lowie , Felix von Luschan , Paul Radin , Richard Thurnwald have published here. Today it is foreign authors Tim Ingold , Christopher Hann , Åke Hultkrautz, Alan Barnard , Monnie Adams and Douglas R. White.
