Zevenaar is not far from the IJssel and the Rhine in the Liemers region , ten kilometers east of Arnhem on the autobahns (Autosnelweg) A12 and A18 and on the railway lines Arnhem – Doetinchem and Arnheim – Oberhausen .
Since April 6, 2017, the Rhein-IJssel-Express has been offering regional transport from Arnhem via Zevenaar and Emmerich to Düsseldorf.
The location near the border has meant that many transport and logistics companies have their headquarters in Zevenaar. Also u. a. Ink and furniture made, and a noticeably large number of auto businesses.
history
In 1382, the Duchy of Cleves wrested the strategically located village of Sevenaer from the Count of Geldern . The Klever gave the place, which never had more than 1000 inhabitants, the Klever town charter in 1487 . Sevenaer had a castle, and was surrounded by city walls with four gates. In the 18th century it came to Prussia . Because there was greater religious freedom in Prussia, the Catholics, who had to cede their churches to the Protestants in the neighboring Netherlands , could continue to use the places of worship and hold processions , which was forbidden in the Netherlands at the time. In 1816 Zevenaar came to the Kingdom of the Netherlands , together with Wehl (now Doetinchem municipality ) and a few other places in the area .
It was connected to the railroad network in 1855 and developed into a typical border town with a transport company, etc. The ink manufacturer Max von Gimborn founded an ink factory there in 1907, which in the 1950s caused great soil pollution . Zevenaar was badly damaged in World War II . After around 1950 the city developed strongly and cheaply.
The Zevenaar railway station used to be a border station with change locomotives and customs controls. International (express) trains no longer stop here today. A direct rail connection to Germany did not run until spring 2017, although a regional train line ( RB 34 "Der Arnheimer" ) between Emmerich and Arnheim with a stop in Zevenaar had been planned since 1998 and also as a weekend trial run from December 2005 to June 2006 was offered.
