Location and economy

Ede is located in the southwest of the Veluwe forest area , on the A12 motorway and the Amsterdam - Utrecht - Arnhem railway line , another motorway ( A30 with the Maanderbroek Knooppunt ) and the secondary railway line to Barneveld . Good roads lead to Apeldoorn , the southern neighbor Wageningen , and west to Veenendaal. The synthetic fiber industry (AKU - Akzo), which was important until 2002, has left Ede. In their place, small businesses and more tourism should create new jobs. The most important for the economy of Edes are:

Commuters who work in Utrecht and Arnhem also live in Ede and Bennekom.

history

The area Edes provided the archaeologists many finds, including from mounds of Neolithic and Bronze Age . Whether around 30,000 years BC BC the Neanderthals lived here is not yet clear. Later, however, Germanic tribes lived in what is now Ede for a long time , including the Chamaven around 400 AD . In the early Middle Ages, Ede and Bennekom emerged as small farming villages. Ede is mentioned in donation documents in 1216, Lunteren in 1300. After the Reformation the villages soon became Protestant, but in Lunteren the Catholics were able to hold their own for a century. An ancient sandy trade route, also known as the “Hessenweg”, connected the trade fair cities of Cologne and Frankfurt with Utrecht and ran from Arnhem via Ede to Amersfoort . These so-called Itinerare were very popular with travelers and merchants. The Hessian wagoners enjoyed their good reputation far beyond the German border. Growth only started in 1840 when the Utrecht - Arnhem railway line and the old "Reichsweg Arnheim - Utrecht" were opened, then shortly before the Second World War the Arnhem - Utrecht motorway (also known as Hazepad ) and several country roads were added. In 1902 the Ede - Barneveld railway was added. This enabled tourism to the nearby Veluwe and the establishment of sanatoriums, etc. The synthetic fiber factory of the Akzo Nobel group (formerly AKU) was located here from around 1920–2002. From around 1880 Ede and Harskamp became important garrison locations for the Dutch army .
