Zhanjiang ( Chinese 湛江 市 , Pinyin Zhànjiāng Shì , Jyutping Zaam 3 gong 1 si 5 , outdated French Fort Bayard ) is a district-free city in the Chinese province of Guangdong . It is located southwest of the provincial capital Guangzhou on the coast of the South China Sea near the Leizhou peninsula .
Today, Zhanjiang is the fourth largest city in the southern Chinese province with 6,994,832 inhabitants (2010 census). It has an area of 12,490 km², which includes the entire Leizhou peninsula and some areas north of it. Zhanjiang consists of four urban districts (altogether 1,360 km² more or less urban settlement area), three independent cities ( Lianjiang , Leizhou and Wuchuan ) and two counties. 1.04 million people live in the actual urban settlement area of Zhanjiang (2010 census).
history
Originally, Zhanjiang was a small fishing port. In 1898 occupied French troops, the city with the aim to set up a trading post there. A 99-year lease agreement (similar to the case of the German lease area Kiautschou and the New Territories of the former British crown colony Hong Kong ) was concluded; the French lease area Kwangtschouwan was created , which, however, came under Chinese sovereignty again in 1946 after it had been occupied by Japanese troops since 1943 . Only after the Second World War did Zhanjiang become an important port city , which was accelerated by the Chinese economic growth of recent years. Favored by the natural conditions as a deep-water port , the city is now one of the ten most heavily handled ports in the People's Republic. In addition to general cargo and container handling, oil and gas production (offshore), fishing, pearl cultivation and salt extraction are the most important industries in Zhanjiang.
Geographical location
Zhanjiang is located southwest of the provincial capital Guangzhou with access to the South China Sea ( French Mer de Chine méridionale ) on the east coast of the Leizhou peninsula ( French Péninsule de Luichow ).
While the people of the boroughs speak the Cantonese dialect, the Hainanese or Leizhou dialect as it is also called is used in most counties. Hakka is only spoken in Lianjiang . For Zhanjiang, as for all other places in the People's Republic of China, the Beijing time zone (GMT +8) applies.
climate
Zhanjiang has a humid subtropical climate (Cwa according to Köppen-Geiger ) with short, mild winters and long, very hot, humid summers. The monthly average temperature is 15.9 ° C in January and 29.0 ° C in July. Heavy monsoons are common from April to September . Due to the maritime climate, Zhanjiang can evade both the heat of summer and the chill of winter.
