history

The place name Zwedru comes from the language of the Krahn , who make up the majority of the population in this part of Liberia.

Former President Samuel K. Doe was born in the suburbs and attended school in Zwedru.

During the civil war , Zwedru as the center of the Krahn was attacked and severely devastated by the warring parties, a large part of the population fled from the opposing troops across the nearby border to the neighboring countries of Ivory Coast and Ghana . The repatriation of these exiles has not yet been completed; families from Ivory Coast are already fleeing from an impending civil war as a result of the power struggle following the 2010 presidential elections .

The region is mainly used for forestry. A relatively intact road network was created through the deployment of blue helmet soldiers stationed in Liberia after the civil war , and the technical infrastructure was rebuilt. The administrative center, schools and a hospital are available.
