Halo is a science fiction video game franchise, created by Bungie and owned and published by Microsoft Game Studios. The main trilogy of games center on the experiences of Master Chief, a cybernetically-enhanced human super-soldier, and his artificial intelligence (AI) companion, Cortana. Master Chief aids future humanity in battling the Covenant, a theocratic alliance of alien races. In this science fiction setting, the term "Halo" refers to Halo megastructures: large, habitable ringed structures, similar to Larry Niven's ringworlds. The collective group of fans of the series is referred to as the "Halo Nation".

Characters of Halo
Halo is set several centuries in the future. After the development of the "Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine", the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) begins a program of interstellar travel and planetary colonization. Over 800 planets are colonized in 200 years, categorized as "Inner Colonies" and "Outer Colonies". The Inner Colonies, being closer to Earth, are more developed and politically stable. Due to the older planets' need for the raw materials and supplies the Outer Colonies provide, tensions and outright civil war foments between the colonies and the UNSC. The UNSC creates the SPARTAN-II Project in order to covertly suppress these rebellions. Twenty-seven years before the events of the main game trilogy, UNSC communication with the colony Harvest is lost, and the ship sent to investigate is destroyed by the Covenant, a theocratic collective of aliens bent on exterminating humanity. The Covenant leadership has declared humanity to be an affront to their Gods, the Forerunner. By 2535, almost all of the Outer Colonies have been destroyed by the Covenant. The Covenant possesses a significant technological advantage, and proves nearly impossible for the UNSC to defeat in space engagements. These events are only alluded to in the video games, but their full descriptions are outlined in the novels Halo: The Fall of Reach and Contact Harvest.

The story arc of the game trilogy begins with the game Halo: Combat Evolved, set in 2552. The Covenant arrive at Reach, which is the UNSC's last colonial stronghold; they vitrify the planet, leaving very few survivors. Master Chief, the last SPARTAN thought alive, escapes on the ship Pillar of Autumn. The Pillar of Autumn, in order to avoid leading the Covenant to Earth, proceeds to coordinates selected by the female A.I. Cortana; dropping out of slipspace, the Autumn discovers the titular Halo, and is attacked by the Covenant. Battle damage forces the Autumn to the surface of the ring, where the Flood, a parasitic alien species, are accidentally released by the Covenant. The release of the Flood prompts the ring's caretaker, 343 Guilty Spark, to convince the Master Chief to activate Halo's defenses, so that the Flood can be destroyed. The Forerunners created Halo to starve the Flood of their food—sentient life—by exterminating all possible vectors for thousands of light-years in every direction. Upon discovering Halo's purpose, the Master Chief detonates the fusion reactors in the crashed Pillar of Autumn, destroying the ring; he and Cortana then escape in a fighter spacecraft.

::The question wasn't one of aesthetics, but of usability (I agree that the centered content is more aesthetically pleasing).
In Halo: First Strike, the Master Chief returns to Reach, located in the Epsilon Eridani system, and rejoins the survivors of the vitrification. He and other SPARTAN-II's attack a Covenant space station, where a fleet is massing to attack Earth. The space station is destroyed, giving the humans time to prepare for the invasion. Soon after in Halo 2 a small Covenant fleet arrives at Earth. At Installation 05, the Master Chief kills the High Prophet, leading to the replacement of the Covenant Elites with the Brutes as the preferred soldiers of the Covenant. This changing of the guard causes a schism within the Covenant. The Elites, realizing they have been betrayed, ally with the humans. The Elite warrior known as the Arbiter joins the humans Miranda Keyes and Sergeant Johnson in stopping the activation of Halo. This act inadvertently puts all the Halo installations on standby: the remaining rings can be activated remotely from a location known as "The Ark".

A general project
The Master Chief stows away on a Forerunner vessel headed to Earth, in the midst of a full-scale invasion by the Covenant. In Halo 3, the Covenant excavate a Forerunner artifact in the African desert; despite the efforts of the Elites and humans, the High Prophet of Truth activates the artifact, which opens a slipspace portal to the Ark. The Master Chief and the Arbiter travel through the portal and kill Truth; They then activate a new Halo ring under construction in an effort to destroy the local Flood lead by the intelligence known as the Gravemind, while sparing the rest of the galaxy.

Its sequel, Halo 2 was released on the Xbox on November 9, 2004 and later for Windows Vista on May 17, 2007. For the first time, the game was released in two different editions: a standard edition with just the game disc and traditional Xbox packaging, and the Collector's Edition with a specially designed aluminum case, along with an additional bonus DVD, extra booklet, and slightly different user manual. Halo 2 introduced new gameplay elements, chief among them the ability to hold and fire two weapons simultaneously, known as "dual wielding". Unlike its predecessor, Halo 2 fully supports online multiplayer via Xbox Live. The success of the main Halo trilogy has spurred the creation of spin-offs. Halo Wars is a real-time strategy game being developed by Ensemble Studios for the Xbox 360. Set in the year 2531, the game will take place prior to the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. According to Ensemble, much effort has been expended into developing a control scheme that is simple and does not have issues like those in other console strategy games. The game was announced at X06, where a pre-rendered trailer was shown; at E3 2007, a montage of gameplay clips featuring many aspects of Halo Wars was shown, followed by a demonstration video on the official site. In an interview on MTV on July 16, 2008, Microsoft’s head of Xbox business, Don Mattrick, stated that Bungie is working on a new Halo game for Microsoft, which he stated is independent of Halo Wars and Halo Chronicles. you have "Carajo" as being the name of a heavy metal band, and that is all. Actually "Carajo" in any Spanish speaking country means "Dam". As when you are upset and you say "God Dam" well in the Spanish expression would be "Carajo". When someone gets you upset, vulgarly, you'll say "Go to Hell" in Spanish we don't send them to hell we send them to "El Carajo" we just add "EL" before to put emphasys on the word which only meands "The". you know in Spanish we have genders. Carajo is a male word so we put "EL".

I think you guys should get your research team and tell them to find out the real word of "Carajo"
To most Spanish country is offensive or rude to use it.

Literary influences
A report published on IGN explores the literary influences present in the franchise, and notes Halo was influenced by The Culture and Ringworld, written by Iain M. Banks and Larry Niven, respectively. It comments on the similarities between characters in Halo and other science fiction series, most notably Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game: aspects of the SPARTAN Project and the design of the Drone species are perceived as reminiscent of the super soldier program and Buggers found in the novel. Other elements of the games such as Master Chief's name "John" have been suggested as originating based on a character named Jon 6725416 in Christopher Rowley's Starhammer. To afford a more enjoyable listening experience, O'Donnell rearranged portions of the music of Halo into standalone suites, which follow the narrative course of the game. The soundtrack also contains music not used in the game, including a variation on the Halo theme that was first played at Halos debut at Macworld 1999.

For Halo 2s soundtrack, producer Nile Rodgers and O’Donnell decided to split the music into two separate volumes. The first, Volume One, was released on November 9, 2004 and contained all the themes as well as the “inspired-by” music present in the game (featuring Incubus, Hoobastank, and Breaking Benjamin). The second release, Volume 2, contained the rest of the music, much of which was incomplete or not included in the first soundtrack, as the first soundtrack was shipped before the game was released; the second volume was released on April 25, 2006. The soundtrack for Halo 3 was released on November 20, 2007. The success of the Halo Series resulted in Guinness World Records awarding the series 5 world records in the Guinness World Records: Gamer's Edition 2008. These records include "Best Selling Game on the Xbox", "Most Successful Machinima Series" for Red vs. Blue, and "Highest Grossing Game (One Day)" for Halo 3. Since the book's publication, Grand Theft Auto IV claimed that record.

Guinness World Records also attributes the "Longest Ban From Xbox Live" to Halo 3, when gamer |Scar| downloaded Halo 3 Epsilon, a test version of the game for Microsoft and Bungie Employees, played the game with his console connected to Xbox Live, and came to the attention of Microsoft. Pirating the game resulted in a ban from the service until December 31, 9999, or roughly 7,992 years.

Alignment

For the last change, yes/no, make sense, needs work? Thanks. -- Quiddity (talk) 08:58, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

I really like the heading-centered alignment. Eleven even (talk) 20:20, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
The question wasn't one of aesthetics, but of usability (I agree that the centered content is more aesthetically pleasing).
I believe the left-aligned version is clearer, and more easily understood as giving just examples of the content found in the subpages; Also, with regards to this page going against our manual-of-style recommendations of not linking headers. Anyone else? -- Quiddity (talk) 22:50, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

A general project

I'd like to develop an alternative introduction to Wikipedia that is not focused on how to edit, but rather how to get acquainted with Wikipedia. How to use the History tab to see what's happened to an article, why getting an account and using a watchlist might be helpful even if you don't plan on editing anytime soon, how talk pages and archives work. Maybe also how the administrative end of things works: how people get admin or bureaucrat rights, what those rights are, how deletion and merge decisions are made, how consensus works in general. If anybody's interested in collaborating on this, please contact me. -Pete (talk) 21:18, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

A specific suggestion

Wikipedia:Introduction 3 should mention joining a WikiProject in a particular area of interest in the right-hand column. (The page isn't editable.) -Pete (talk) 21:18, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes it is. Mallerd (talk) 07:54, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

"Other Media"

The link "Other Media" currently links to Wikipedia:Media, a disambiguation page. Looking at the history, it appears the originally intended link target is now at Wikipedia:Creation_and_usage_of_media_files. Should this link be fixed? -- 128.104.112.85 (talk) 21:23, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Done. Thanks for not only pointing out the problem, but also researching the solution! Ideal. -- Quiddity (talk) 21:29, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Interwiki use of pictures

Can I use a picture from the Dutch Wiki in de English Wiki ? Or dom I have to upload it again ? thanks in advance. Bornestera (talk) 17:04, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

I believe you have to upload it again, but consider uploading it to WP:COMMONS. Then it can be used on all wikimedia projects, including all of the wikipedias. JackSchmidt (talk) 17:23, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll try it Bornestera (talk) 18:36, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Editing software

Some links to third-party software that can be used to edit articles would fit well in this article. SharkD (talk) 00:53, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

There is a link to Wikipedia:Tools here already. I think anyone who is technical enough to want a separate program to edit with, will be able to find that. -- Quiddity (talk) 02:05, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm thinking of adding this to the 'places to ask questions' bit - any thoughts? Privatemusings (talk) 05:25, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

I think it's a useful page for a significant demographic of wikipedia users, so I'm going to add it somewhere suitable.. cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 02:39, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Carajo

you have "Carajo" as being the name of a heavy metal band, and that is all. I think you guys should get your research team and tell them to find out the real word of "Carajo" To most Spanish country is offensive or rude to use it. I am just trying to help you out. thanks, —Preceding unsigned comment added by Salsero 007 (talkcontribs) 13:01, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Actually "carajo" has several menanings in spanish, as can be seen in the Spanish Wikictionary (see es:Carajo and es:Carajo (desambiguación)), among them:
 1. the place on top of the mainmast where a lookout was placed in a sailing ship (Crow's nest).
 2. related to the previous one, a punishment place. Hence the spanish expression mandar (a alguien) al carajo, (roughly) translated as to send (somebody) to the crow's nest with the intention to mean "leave me alone".
 3. vulgar synonim of "penis", in some spanish-speaking regions; hence can be used/understood as an insult.
 4. lack of someting, as in the expression me importa un carajo which can be translated as I don't give a damn.
It can be perceived as offensive/rude according the situation, context, phrase, intent, pronunciation and even the region where the word is used. I'm not a linguist, but hopefully helped to understand better this (quite frequently used) spanish languaje word. Regards, DPdH (talk) 03:32, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

This isn't a good place to ask for help. Try asking at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). They should be able to assist you, or direct you to the most appropriate place. -- Quiddity (talk) 17:48, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
The most appropriate place to ask for assistance about Wikipedia is the Help Desk anyone their will probably be willing to help. Dark Mage 17:52, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Duplication

Need to combine creating pages and life cycle of an article. Also, the lists on this page are too long, need more sub-categories. Funandtrvl (talk) 07:19, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
