Stanley Yelnats IV is an unpopular, overweight teenage boy who lives in an apartment with his entrepreneur father, mother, and grandfather. The family, while rich in spirit, has no luck at all. They believe this was caused when their ancestor Elya Yelnats tried to win the hand of the lovely, and empty-headed, Myra Menke. Elya is helped by the elderly Madame Zeroni, who asks as payment that he carry her up the mountain and sing to her as she drinks from a stream. If he fails however, he and his family will be cursed "for always and eternity". When he tries to marry Myra, Elya becomes disgusted at her inability to decide between him and an old, disgusting man. Elya leaves for America, forgetting to fulfill his promise to Madame Zeroni. As a result, the family has since been plagued by bad luck. Misfortune strikes Stanley himself, when he is falsely accused of stealing a pair of sneakers that baseball star Clyde "Sweet Feet" Livingston donated to an orphanage (his defense, that the sneakers fell from the sky, is not believed). Given the choice of going to prison or Camp Green Lake, Stanley chooses the latter. He arrives to find the "camp", a dried-up desert where the boys there must dig a hole every day to "build character". The camp is run by the Warden and Mr. Sir. He is put in Group D, and his counselor is Mr. Pendanski.

Many years prior, in contrast to today, the lake is full of water and has a small town nearby. The lake is owned by Charles "Trout" Walker, an arrogant man who tries to unsuccessfully court the lovely schoolteacher, Katherine Barlow. Instead, she gravitates to Sam the "onion man," who is famous for using onions as a cure-all, as well as a repellent for the dangerous yellow spotted lizards, which plague the area. Paying him with her famous spiced peaches, Katherine gets Sam to fix up her schoolhouse to be near him. When everything is fixed, she tells him that her heart is broken and he kisses her to fix it. Because he is black and she is white, it is illegal for a black man to kiss a white woman, so the townspeople kill Sam under Walker's leadership. Furious, Katherine kills the sheriff and becomes an outlaw called "Kissin' Kate Barlow" (so known because she kisses the men she kills). One of the people she robbed was the first Stanley Yelnats, whom she left to die in the desert. Instead, he climbed a mountain and found water and food. Kate died when threatened by Trout Walker and his wife, Linda, who believe that she buried her loot in the lake, which dried up after Sam was shot. She responds by letting a yellow spotted lizard bite her and tells them to start digging.

In the present day, Stanley slowly gains the respect of his fellow diggers. When he finds what appears to be a golden bullet casing and sees the fuss the Warden makes over it, he begins to suspect that they are digging holes to actually find something. Meanwhile, he begins to teach Hector Zeroni (Zero), a lonely boy at the camp, how to read and write, in exchange for Zero digging Stanley's holes. When Stanley gets into a fight with Ricky (nicknamed Zigzag), Zero saves Stanley by choking Zigzag almost to death. The other boys, resentful of Stanley's shirking of his hole-digging, reveal Zero's and Stanley's arrangement. The Warden, Mr. Sir, and Mr. Pendanski hear about the fight and begin to insult Zero's intelligence. Zero hits Mr. Pendanski across the face with the shovel and runs into the desert.

A few days later, as Mr. Sir is filling water bottles, Stanley steals his truck with the intent of finding Zero, only to drive it into a giant hole. Continuing on foot, Stanley eventually finds Zero in an overturned boat (actually the wreckage of Sam's boat) subsisting on "Sploosh," a jarred food that tastes like peaches (Kate's spiced peaches). The two climb the same mountain that Stanley's ancestor climbed, hoping to find the source of water that saved Stanley Yelnats I. Along the way, Zero becomes ill, requiring Stanley to carry him up the mountain. At the top, the two find water. Stanley, relieved at their salvation, sings to Zero as the latter drinks. Stanley and Zero return to the camp to find whatever is hidden there. They dig in a hole where Stanley unearthed a gold lipstick tube and find a suitcase. Unfortunately, they are trapped by the Warden, Mr. Sir, Dr. Pendanski and a nest of yellow spotted lizards. The lizards do not attack due to the boys' consumption of onions and they are rescued by Stanley's lawyer. She takes Stanley, Zero, and the suitcase home. As Stanley and Zero leave, it begins to rain again in Camp Green Lake, after a hundred years of drought. The suitcase holds the treasure that "Kissin' Kate Barlow" robbed from the first Stanley Yelnats. Stanley and Zero each receive about a million dollars. Using the money, the Yelnats family moves into a bigger house. At the end, Stanley and Zero, Clyde Livingston, and his wife are seen having a Super Bowl party at the Yelnats's house. A commercial for "Sploosh" (Stanley's father's cure for foot odor) is aired, featuring Clyde Livingston.

Main character descriptions
Stanley Yelnats IV/Caveman
Stanley Yelnats

Zig Zag
Zig Zag is a boy with zig zaggy blond hair (hence the nickname) and an attitude. He does not say much but at one time broke into a fight with Stanley Yelnats over Stanley's trade off with Zero that include Zero digging Stanley's holes in exchange for reading and writing lessons. His real name is Ricky.

Armpit
A large African-American boy at Camp Green Lake. Brusque, but loyal to his friends, especially to X-Ray, the self-appointed leader of the group. Although his real name is Theodore, he is nicknamed "Armpit," as explained in the book's sequel, because of pain in the flesh between his arm and his torso (it may also have something to do with his name, which can be interpreted as "The Odor" and may be a reference to his odor). He was sent to Camp Green Lake "because of a bucket of popcorn," which is lightly explained in the book's sequel, Small Steps. He had been trying to ease his way along a row of seats at the movies. He was only fourteen at the time, and was making his way past a couple of high school seniors when one of them stuck out his foot. They yelled at him for spilling the popcorn on them, and he demanded that they pay for the popcorn, and by the time it was all over, the two older boys were in the hospital, and he was on his way to Camp Green Lake Juvenile Correctional Facility. In the novel Small Steps, his and X-Ray's life is followed after they leave the camp and they become the best of friends.

X-Ray
X-Ray, whose nickname is Pig Latin for his proper name Rex, is Tent D's leader. He is also goes by the name T-Rex. He is African American, and wears thick glasses. He is street-smart and dictates to the other boys. He, with the others, later accuses Stanley of being racist to Zero, even though X-Ray himself dislikes Zero. At the end of the book, when Camp Green Lake is closed down and the other boys cheer Stanley, X-Ray is seen hanging back, and then leaving by himself. He, for having been at the camp the longest in his group, has the privilege of using the shortest shovel.
Mentioned in the sequel Small Steps, X-Ray got put in Camp Green Lake for selling parsley and oregano, saying it was marijuana.

Zero
Hector Zeroni
Hector Zeroni is the great-great-great grandson of Madame Zeroni. He is a "Ward of the State" which indicates his lack of parents and his homelessness. He is the fastest digger in "Group D" and very skilled at mental math, yet he is considered dumb by the rest of the boys due to his inability to read and because he rarely speaks. He is eventually taught to read by Stanley, with whom he becomes friends. His family retains a version of the song taught by Madame Zeroni, which appears more optimistic than that known to Stanley and his ancestors. He is brought to Camp Green Lake because he was caught stealing shoes from a store, and later defends Stanley from another inmate, Zigzag, who was beating Stanley up. Zero and Stanley leave Camp Green Lake after the Warden is forced to sell out her land.

Magnet
Magnet, whose real name is José, is a Hispanic, lively character. Magnet steals whatever he can get his hands on; he is at Camp Green Lake because he stole a puppy. He manages to steal Mr. Sir's bag of sunflower seeds, which complicates matters for Stanley later

"Kissin" Vanny Kate Barlow
Katherine Barlow was Green Lake's only school teacher. She is said to be very beautiful. She falls in love with Sam, a black onion salesman who occasionally repairs the school. One day the two are seen kissing in the rain, and because of the difference in their race, Sam is killed. From that day on, she becomes a notorious bank-robber and murderer, Kissin' Kate Barlow, known for kissing the men she kills and leaving a lipstick mark. She eventually robs Stanley Yelnats the First and hides his treasure in the now-desolate lake bottom that has become Camp Green Lake. Trout Walker and his wife returned and captured her to find the location of the treasure. She dies due to a bite from a yellow-spotted lizard. In the present day novel, the intent of Camp Green Lake is to dig holes to find the treasure.

Mr. Sir
Mr. Sir is the counselor at the camp. He is severe, arrogant and nasty. Once addicted to smoking tobacco, he has quit smoking and eats sunflower seeds constantly (one bag a week). However, at the end of the story, he starts smoking again on the grounds that 'Sunflower seeds won't cut it.' It is he who often remarks "this isn't a Girl Scout camp", which generates the irony of Camp Green Lake's transformation into just that. He has a tattoo on his left shoulder. He wears sunglasses and a cowboy hat. He also gets scratched by The Warden.

Mr. Pendanski
Mr. Pendanski is one of the camp's counselors. He appears to be the most compassionate of the staff at Camp Green Lake– leading to the nickname "Mom"– but eventually proves himself to be as egocentric as Mr. Sir. He insults Zero at every turn.

Charles "Trout" Walker
During the 1800s, Trout Walker was a wealthy, loud, stupid, arrogant, selfish, don't care about no one, egocentric, display-prone local bully. He was Katherine Barlow's student, albeit more for her company than for an education, until she refused to be courted by him. Trout later killed Katherine's secret sweetheart Sam, who is an African American and at the time it was illegal for an African American to kiss a white woman. After Green Lake dried up, Trout Walker's family lost their fortune, for which Linda Miller had married him for. Trout and Linda found Kate in the cabin and dragged her to the dried-up lake, not even giving her time to put on her shoes. She was forced to walk on the hot ground, being ordered to give them the hidden cash. If she stopped walking, Trout and Linda would hit Kate on the back with a shovel and demand again that she lead them to the spot or they'd kill her. Kate is unphased, saying that she has wanted to die for a long time, and that they'd never find the loot. Kate dies laughing when she's bitten on her ankle by a yellow-spotted lizard leaving them unable to locate the treasure.

Madame Zeroni
Madame Zeroni was a gypsy, with no left foot, as well as being the only friend of Elya Yelnats, and related to Hector Zeroni (Zero). When Elya came to Madame Zeroni to seek help in marrying Myra Menke, she gave him the runt of her litter of pigs and told him that he had to carry the pig up a mountain ("where the water runs uphill"), let it drink water from the stream and sing him a specific lullaby. If he completed that task and continued to do it everyday for a month, then the pig would grow big and strong-as well as himself- and he could trade it for the hand of Myra. In return, when the pig was full grown, then he would have to carry Madame Zeroni up the mountain and let her drink from the stream and sing her the same lullaby. If he did not complete that task, then him and the rest of his descendants would be cursed. Although Elya did not believe in the curse, he wanted to carry up Madame Zeroni as an act of friendship, but unfortunately, he forgot his end of the bargain and went to America, therefore cursing himself and the rest of his descendants.

Brian (Twitch)
When Zero runs away, Twitch is put in the D Tent. He twitches a lot (hence the nickname), and has a problem with taking cars on joyrides, which (according to Twitch himself) makes him even more twitchy. When Stanley attempts to bring the truck to where Zero is, Twitch yells, "Put it in gear!"

Yellow Spotted Lizards
Voracious, venomous lizards about a foot long, with eleven yellow spots, red eyes, black teeth, and white tongues, inhabit Camp Green Lake. The lizards' venom is fatal, extremely fast-acting, excruciatingly painful, and they inhabit the holes dug by campers, eating insects, small mammals, certain cactus thorns, and sunflower seed shells. The lizards are repelled by onions.
