However now the article HAS contents, though not much yet and which needs to be wikified, but now it's no longer a speedy deletion candidate anymore. ::I'd like to reiterate what Andy has already said in that there is no need to delete this article now that it has content and anyone who does is breaking wikipedia guidelines. Just putting the <nowiki>{{stub}}</nowiki> message in and nothing else is grounds for speedy deletion but this is not the case here. In future if you are in the process of working on a page and would like others to leave it alone until you have finished, you can put the <nowiki>{{inuse}}</nowiki> tag into the main body of the article until you have finished, though this should normally only be used for an outside maximum of a few hours. -- [[User:Francs2000|Francs2000]] | [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Francs2000&action=edit&section=new Talk] [[]] 15:50, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission is an independent statutory body in Ireland charged with overseeing An Garda Síochána, the police force of the Republic of Ireland. It was established under the Garda Síochána Act, 2005. The Commission deals with complaints from members of the public about Gardaí. It replaced the Garda Síochána Complaints Board. The Commission has more powers than its predecessor, and unlike it is not made up of members of the force. It came into being on 9 May 2007. It is empowered to:

  • Directly and independently investigate complaints against members of the Garda Síochána
  • Investigate any matter, even where no complaint has been made, where it appears that a Garda may have committed an offence or behaved in a way that would justify disciplinary proceedings
  • Investigate any practise, policy or procedure of the Garda Síochána with a view to reducing the incidence of related complaints

The members of the Commission are: Justice Kevin Haugh (High Court Judge and chairman of the Commission), Carmel Foley (former Director of Consumer Affairs), and Conor Brady (former editor of The Irish Times and author of a book on the history of the Gardaí).

Because of the disproportionately large number of complaints from County Mayo, arising from the Shell to Sea protests, the Commission wrote to then Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform Brian Lenihan requesting a review of how the protests were policed, but the minister did not feel it was appropriate to proceed[1][2].
