The first settlement, instigated by Gerrit Boon, was made around 1795. The village was incorporated in [[1855]]. The original name of the community, provided by Boon, was "Kortenaer" (after [[Egbert Bartholomeusz Kortenaer]], a Dutch admiral). |

The former [[Black River Canal]] was constructed to connect the [[Erie Canal]] to the [[Black River (New York)|Black River]]. The completion of a railroad line to the village in 1855, marked the decline for the recently completed canal. |

There were 960 housing units at an average density of 539.7/sq mi (208.2/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.49% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.05% [[African American (U.S. Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.19% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.05% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], and 0.23% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.23% of the population. |
