== Surname ==
'''Sable Island''' (French: ''île de Sable'') is a small [[Canada|Canadian]] island situated 180 km southeast of mainland [[Nova Scotia]] in the [[Atlantic Ocean]]. As of 2008, the island is home to around 5 people, 4 Environment Canada Station personnel and one resident researcher, but in summer, this number swells to include seasonal contractors, research scientists, photographers, etc. Sable Island is protected under the Canada Shipping Act, which means that permission must be obtained from the [[Canadian Coast Guard]] to visit the island. Sable Island is part of District 13 of the [[Halifax Regional Municipality]] in [[Nova Scotia]].
A psychiatrist with the surname Crane? Could this be just a [[Frasier Crane|coincidence]]? [[User:JIP|<nowiki></nowiki>]] &mdash; <font color="#CC0000">J</font><font color="#00CC00">I</font><font color="#0000CC">P</font> | [[User talk:JIP|Talk]] 20:48, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

==Geography==
[[Image:SableIsland1.jpg|frame|left|365x274px]]
Sable Island is a narrow crescent-shaped [[sandbar]] with a surface area of about 34 km². Despite being nearly 42 km long, it is no more than 2 km across at its widest point. It emerges from vast shoals and shallows on the [[continental shelf]] which, in tandem with the area's frequent fog and sudden strong storms including [[hurricanes]] and [[northeaster]]s, have caused over 350 recorded [[shipwreck]]s. It is often referred to as ''the Graveyard of the Atlantic'', as it sits astride the [[great circle]] route from North America's east coast to [[Europe]]. The nearest landfall is 160 kilometres to the northwest near [[Canso, Nova Scotia|Canso]], Nova Scotia.

== Urgent: NO Need FOR Renaming ==
Sable Island was named after its [[sand]]&mdash;<nowiki></nowiki>''sable''<nowiki></nowiki> is [[French language|French]] for “sand”. It is covered with [[grass]] and other low-growing vegetation. In 1901, the federal government planted over 80,000 trees on the island in an attempt to stabilize the soil; all died. Sable Island is believed to have formed from [[terminal moraine|large quantities of sand and gravel]] deposited on the continental shelf near the end of the last [[ice age]]. The island is continually changing its shape with the effects of strong winds and violent ocean storms. The island has several freshwater ponds on the south side between the station and west light and a brackish lake named Lake Wallace near its centre.
There are frequent heavy fogs in the area due to the contrasting effects of the cold [[Labrador Current]] and the warm [[Gulf Stream]]. During winter months, the moderating influence of the Gulf Stream can sometimes give Sable Island the warmest temperatures in Canada.

This needs to be renamed "Scarecrow (DC Comics)". Marvel Comic also has a scarecrow, and the disambig page [[The_Scarecrow]] can separate them. [[User:Harvestdancer|Harvestdancer]] 19:33, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
Sable Island should not be confused with [[Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia|Cape Sable Island]] in southwestern Nova Scotia.

Or since he has now been seen in Batman Begins, perhaps it should be moved to [[The Scarecrow (Batman Villain)]]. [[User:JP Godfrey|JP Godfrey]] 22:01, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
==Wildlife==
The island is home to over 300 free-roaming [[feral horse]]s which are protected by law from human interference. The best evidence for the origin of the horse population is that they are descended from horses confiscated from [[Acadian]]s during the [[Great Expulsion]] and left on the island by [[Thomas Hancock]], Boston merchant and uncle of [[John Hancock]].

Yeah, but this one is the real deal, the original one, and the better known, the bob kane creation deserves to remain "scarecrow (comics)". Besides, i think that what most people would do when making a link on another article. The other one, not that is a bad character, but he can be called "Scarecrow (marvel)"--[[User:T-man, the Wise Scarecrow|T-man, the Wise Scarecrow]] 06:25, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

== Crow's name? ==
In the past, excess horses have been rounded up and shipped off the island for use in coal mines on [[Cape Breton Island]], or to be sold, but the Government gave full protection to the horse population in 1960, and they have been left alone ever since. No human is allowed to interfere with any of the island's wildlife because it is a wildlife preserve and is protected by the Canadian government.
I was always under the impression his crow's name was Nightmare? Where did Craw come from? - unsigned by [[User:207.200.116.74]]

[[Common Seal|Harbour]] and [[Grey seal]]s also breed on the island's shores. Seal counts from the 1960s for the grey seal population estimated 200-300 pups born at that time on the island, but surveys from as recent as 2003-2004 estimated the number of pups born in that season at 50,000<ref>[http://www.greenhorsesociety.com/Seals/Seal_Survey.htm Sable Island: Photographic Survey of Grey Seal Pups (Feb 2004)]</ref>. The seals are occasionally predated by the various shark species that inhabit the waters nearby, including the [[Great White Shark]] <ref>[http://www.greenhorsesociety.com/sharks/shark_predation.htm Shark Predation on Sable Island Seals (July 2008)]</ref>.

==Cleanup==
Several large bird colonies are also resident, including [[Arctic tern]]s and [[Ipswich sparrow]]s (''Passerculus sandwichensis princeps''). The latter, a subspecies of the [[Savannah Sparrow]], breeds only on Sable Island. Many other species of birds are found on the island - some are intentional visitors, migratory or otherwise, but some are simply small birds that have been blown out to sea in violent storms and have been fortunate enough to find themselves on dry land again.And lions spotted

The [[Portugal|Portuguese]] explorer [[João Álvares Fagundes]] and his expedition, who explored this region in 1520&ndash;1521, may have been among the first Europeans to have encountered the island. A life-saving station was established on Sable Island by the government of Nova Scotia in 1801 and its life-saving crew became the first permanent inhabitants of the island, a brief attempt at colonization at the end of the 16th century by France having failed. Two [[lighthouse]]s, one on the eastern tip and one on the western tip were built in 1872.<ref>E.H. Rip Irwin. Lighthouses and Lights of Nova Scotia, Nimbus Press, pages 100-102 </ref> Until the advent of modern ship navigation, Sable Island's two light stations were home to permanent lighthouse keepers and their families, as well as the crewmembers of the life-saving station. In the early 20th century, the [[Marconi Company]] established a wireless station on the island and the Canadian government similarly established a weather station.

==Next==
Although the [[Canadian Coast Guard]] (CCG) has now automated the light stations, [[Department of the Environment (Canada)|Environment Canada]] and [[Department of Fisheries and Oceans (Canada)|DFO]] conduct routine atmospheric and meteorological studies from a permanently occupied station on Sable Island because of its unique isolated geographic position down-wind from the North American mainland. Sable Island is specifically mentioned in the [[Constitution of Canada]] of 1867 as being the special responsibility of the [[government of Canada|federal government]]. For this reason it is considered a separate [[amateur radio]] "entity" (equivalent to country for award credit) and the occasional operators who visit use the special [[callsign]] prefix CY0.

We need to put more bio here, how does he know batman's identity, did I missed that from Hush?--[[User:T-man, the Wise Scarecrow|T for Trouble-maker]] 19:52, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Out of concern for preserving the island's frail ecology, as well as sovereignty purposes, recreational boaters require specific permission from CCG to set foot on the island. The [[Canadian Forces]] continuously patrol the area using aircraft and naval vessels, partly due to the nearby presence of [[natural gas]] and [[Petroleum|oil]] drilling [[oil rig|rigs]] and an undersea [[Pipeline transport|pipeline]]. Sable Island's heliport also contains emergency aviation fuel for [[search and rescue]] helicopters, which use the island to stage further offshore into the Atlantic. Should the need arise, the island also serves as an emergency evacuation point for crews aboard nearby drilling rigs of the [[Sable Offshore Energy Project]].
-
I agree, there isn't anything about his childhood as mentioned in Scarecrow:Year One. Scarecrow was only in Hush for two pages. I don't recall him ever discovering Batman's identity. As far as I know here is a list of the people who canonically know who Batman really is:
Alfred
Both Batgirls
All the Robins
The Riddler
Some of the Justice League (Superman, Wonder Woman, J'onn J'onzz , Aquaman, Green Arrow, Zatanna,Black Canary, The Atom, Hawkman, Blue Bettle II (Dead), Green Lanterns, The Flash II-III (Barry Allen, Wally West.)
And in the cartoons, Lois lane and Andrea Beumont know but I don't know if it official canon.

==Odd coincidences==
The island is a part of the [[Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia|Halifax Regional Municipality]], the federal electoral district of [[Halifax (electoral district)|Halifax]], and the provincial electoral district of [[Halifax Citadel]], although the urban area of Halifax proper is some 300&nbsp;km or 190 mi away on the Nova Scotian mainland.
Note that the first time the origin of the Batman was shown in tv or movies was in an episode of Super Powers from the 1980's called the Fear-which also featured the Scarecrow in it. Odd coincidence that he got into Begins, the first film to show the murder of the Waynes by Joe Chill, right?

In an odd coincidence, during the first half dozen issues of The Batman Adventures, the Scarecrow engineered a scheme that caused mass aphasia in Gotham's citizens. Ra's Al Ghul in JLA's Tower of Babel used a similar scheme.(some dude)
==Shipwrecks==
Sable Island is famous for the large number of shipwrecks. An estimated 350 vessels are believed to have fallen victim to the island's sand bars. Thick fogs, treacherous currents and the island's location in the middle of a major transatlantic shipping route and rich fishing grounds account for the large number of wrecks. The first recorded wreck was in 1583, the last in 1999.<ref>
[http://museum.gov.ns.ca/mma/AtoZ/Sable.html Maritime Museum of the Atlantic Sable Island Shipwreck & Lifesaving Web Page]</ref> Few wrecks are visible on the island as the ships are usually crushed and buried by the sand.<ref>[http://epe.lac-bac.gc.ca/100/205/301/ic/cdc/sableisland/english_en/history_hi/graveyard_gr/treasures_gr.htm "Graveyard of the Atlantic", ''Sable Island'' Digital Collection, Industry Canada]</ref> The large number of wrecks have earned the island the nickname "Graveyard of the Atlantic", although the phrase is also used to describe [[Cape Cod]] and the [[Graveyard of the Atlantic|Outer Banks area of North Carolina]].

==Sable Island Station==
[[Image:SableStation.jpg|frame|right|365x274px]] Sable Island is the subject of extensive scientific research. A wide range of manual and automated instruments are used at the Sable Island station, including the Automatic Weather Observing System operated by the [[Meteorological Service of Canada]]; an [[aerology]] program measuring conditions in the upper atmosphere using [[radiosonde]] which is carried aloft by a hydrogen-filled balloon to altitudes beyond 35 kilometres; and a program collecting data on background levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), which began on the island in 1974. Research is also done on Sable Island to monitor the long range transport of pollution aerosols. Fog chemistry is studied, examining the transport and composition of atmospheric toxins carried in fog. [[Tropospheric]] [[ozone]] is measured and is analyzed by researchers in Canada and the USA along with 20 other North American sites.

Yeah, and another odd coincidence is that, mediocre editors keep erasing those very interesting points you just made. The thing I don't get from wikipedia is howcome arrogant editors keep modifying things they know no crap about. Aghh!! Makes me so angry!! So pretentious!!--[[User:T-man, the Wise Scarecrow|T-man, the wise]] 04:16, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
The installation of the BGS Magnetic Observatory on Sable Island was funded as a joint venture between the [[British Geological Survey]], Sperry-Sun Drilling Services, and Sable Offshore Energy. The data collected at the observatory aid scientific research into rates of change of the Earth's [[magnetic field]] and increase the accuracy of the BGS Global Geomagnetic Model. Data from the geomagnetic observatory are used by the offshore energy industry for precise positioning activities such as directional drilling.

Also, I think there is a Paul Dini or Bruce Timm quote about the last Scarecrow redesign stating that "they don't know if that's a mask anymore". Can someone get that quote. That added some scary movie air to the character (he was never seen with out mask after that quote).--[[User:T-man, the Wise Scarecrow|T-man, the wise]] 04:20, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Twas Paul Dini, but I think you may have misheard what he said. He actually said "we don't know if there is even a man under that mask any more":

== Bibliography ==
* Sable Island is mentioned in the book ''[[The Perfect Storm]]'' (the [[1991 Halloween Nor'easter]]) and a staged version of the island appears in the movie by the same name. The swordfishing boat ''[[Andrea Gail]]'', the main focus of the film, is believed to have gone down somewhere near Sable Island in 100'+ storm waves. The 406-Megahertz [[EPIRB]] emergency beacon identified as belonging to the ''Andrea Gail'', was found washed ashore on Sable Island on either November 5 or November 8, 1991, according to different sources.

Hey I'm planning on working on a bibliography for the scarecrow. It won't be definitive by any means but I'm gonna do my best and then hopefully others will add to it. I'm planning on doing his comic appearances only, i'm hoping others will do his television appearances. Okay watch this space.

==Is The Long Halloween Cannon?==

''In Jeph Loeb's graphic novel, Batman: The Long Halloween, it is revealed that Scarecrow strangled his own mother on Mother's Day.''
Is "revealed" really the proper word there? It's my understanding that The Long Halloween isn't supposed to be cannon with the ongoing Batman books, and revealed sort of implies that it is.
[[User:GambitRF|GambitRF]] 02:54, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

== Riddler ==

[[User:Czar Baldy Bald IV|Czar Baldy Bald IV]] 01:02, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Agreed, however why was Riddler locked up? I understand Scarecrow because of Begins, but was Riddler not appearing really the cause of such copyright issues? [[User:Claycrow|Claycrow]] 01:08, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

I didn't mean copyright, I meant what makes characters in two different places at the same time Issues. [[User:Claycrow|Claycrow]] 00:08, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

:Based on the text in [[Justice League Unlimited]], the Bat-Embargo had as much to do with ''The Batman'' as with ''Batman Begins''. WB just went with a blanket "No Batman characters except Batman" line. - [[User:J Greb|J Greb]] 00:48, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

I understand, but still, should Riddler have a mention? [[User:Claycrow|Claycrow]] 01:15, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

I don't know. I assume that Riddler's lack of appearance is related to the embargo. I can see no other reason why two of the better known original legionnares would not have been included while more obscure evildoers like the Key, Heat Wave, and the Puzzler were added. I guess what would decide if Riddler's exclusion should be mentioned (in his own article or here) is whether or not he was "slated to appear" as it says of Scarecrow. It implies that all original members were to appear. What does anyone else think?

You could put this there.
Near the begining of The Dark knight, Scarcrow is meeting with some armed mobsters in a parking garage over a deal gone wrong. The meeting is interrupted by multiple civillians who are all dressed up in homemade Batman costumes. They are inspired by the real Batman and try to fight the gangs however they are stoped by the real Batman. A battle breaks out and Batman subdues all the criminals and fake Batmen. Scarecrow attempts to escape in a white van but Batman leaps down the garage and lands ontop of the van. Scarecrow is then subdued. He is not seen again in the rest of the film. <small>—Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[Special:Contributions/91.108.135.105|91.108.135.105]] ([[User talk:91.108.135.105|talk]]) 19:21, 17 July 2008 (UTC)</small><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

==Robotman?==
I couldn't help noticing that another DC Comics character, the cyborg Robotman goes by the name of Robert ''Crane''. Some guy named "Crane 117" noticed that too and posted it in the discussion page, but who's ever heard of Robotman?
Is the name thing just a coincedence? Or is there some connection deep (''deep deep'') in the family tree? Feel free to comment.

It makes sense that Scarecrow would be "Crane" because of ''Sleepy Hollow''. Cyborg superheroes have nothing in common with that.

Urgent: NO Need FOR Renaming

This needs to be renamed "Scarecrow (DC Comics)". Marvel Comic also has a scarecrow, and the disambig page The_Scarecrow can separate them. Harvestdancer 19:33, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Or since he has now been seen in Batman Begins, perhaps it should be moved to The Scarecrow (Batman Villain). JP Godfrey 22:01, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, but this one is the real deal, the original one, and the better known, the bob kane creation deserves to remain "scarecrow (comics)". Besides, i think that what most people would do when making a link on another article. The other one, not that is a bad character, but he can be called "Scarecrow (marvel)"--T-man, the Wise Scarecrow 06:25, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Scarecrow was only in Hush for two pages. I don't recall him ever discovering Batman's identity. As far as I know here is a list of the people who canonically know who Batman really is: Alfred Both Batgirls All the Robins The Riddler Some of the Justice League (Superman, Wonder Woman, J'onn J'onzz , Aquaman, Green Arrow, Zatanna,Black Canary, The Atom, Hawkman, Blue Bettle II (Dead), Green Lanterns, The Flash II-III (Barry Allen, Wally West.) And in the cartoons, Lois lane and Andrea Beumont know but I don't know if it official canon. - didn't Gordon find out it was Wayne at the end of Batman: Year One? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.231.138.145 (talk) 04:33, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Odd coincidences

Note that the first time the origin of the Batman was shown in tv or movies was in an episode of Super Powers from the 1980's called the Fear-which also featured the Scarecrow in it. Odd coincidence that he got into Begins, the first film to show the murder of the Waynes by Joe Chill, right?

In an odd coincidence, during the first half dozen issues of The Batman Adventures, the Scarecrow engineered a scheme that caused mass aphasia in Gotham's citizens. Ra's Al Ghul in JLA's Tower of Babel used a similar scheme.(some dude)

Yeah, and another odd coincidence is that, mediocre editors keep erasing those very interesting points you just made. The thing I don't get from wikipedia is howcome arrogant editors keep modifying things they know no crap about. Aghh!! Makes me so angry!! So pretentious!!--T-man, the wise 04:16, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Also, I think there is a Paul Dini or Bruce Timm quote about the last Scarecrow redesign stating that "they don't know if that's a mask anymore". Can someone get that quote. That added some scary movie air to the character (he was never seen with out mask after that quote).--T-man, the wise 04:20, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Twas Paul Dini, but I think you may have misheard what he said. He actually said "we don't know if there is even a man under that mask any more": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owaMoWmD2vE

Is The Long Halloween Cannon?

In Jeph Loeb's graphic novel, Batman: The Long Halloween, it is revealed that Scarecrow strangled his own mother on Mother's Day. Is "revealed" really the proper word there? It's my understanding that The Long Halloween isn't supposed to be cannon with the ongoing Batman books, and revealed sort of implies that it is. GambitRF 02:54, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Speaking of which, I thought the plot was that the gaurds told batman that his mother was visiting him on Mother's day, and batman tells them that he killed his mother on Valentine's day... 75.153.231.20 09:59, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

I have the book in front of me, and he definitely says Mother's Day. And I was under the impression that TLH was very much cannonical. I've been wrong before, though... Atreyu1075 20:43, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Riddler

The article mentions that, as one of the original 13 Legion members, he was slated to appear on JLU, but was stopped by the Bat Embargo. Wouldn't it be appropriate for a similar mention to be made on Riddler's page? Czar Baldy Bald IV 01:02, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Agreed, however why was Riddler locked up? I understand Scarecrow because of Begins, but was Riddler not appearing really the cause of such copyright issues? Claycrow 01:08, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

I didn't mean copyright, I meant what makes characters in two different places at the same time Issues. Claycrow 00:08, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Based on the text in Justice League Unlimited, the Bat-Embargo had as much to do with The Batman as with Batman Begins. WB just went with a blanket "No Batman characters except Batman" line. - J Greb 00:48, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

I understand, but still, should Riddler have a mention? Claycrow 01:15, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Czar Baldy Bald IV 00:00, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Scary or violent?

So is his fighting style called "Scary dancing" or "Violent dancing"? I'm almost positive it's mostly been referred to as "violent". 75.153.231.20 10:00, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

The fact of the matter is, either remove the sentence here, or previde a citation. Anyone got one? Claycrow 20:49, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Irecently saw the Dark Knight at a preview screening. He is defeated by Batman very early in the film at put away in prison. His screen time is akin to that of Count Dookus in Star Wars III. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.99.199.2 (talk) 21:09, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

—Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.108.135.105 (talk) 19:21, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Umm, just letting you all know that Dr. Jonathan Crane is seen throughout the movie, as he was at the attempted assassination of the mayor and subsequently captured by Harvey Dent. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.105.126.237 (talk) 12:23, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Umm, no Crane was not at the assassination attempt and caught by Dent. That was a former patiant at Arkham. Listen to what Batman said to Dent when Dent was deciding the mans fate.

The Batman

Since Legions of Gothom is gone/down, I think the link should not be here. Or we could post an Image? Claycrow 20:49, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

History section way too long

The overly huge plot summaries of Mistress of Fear and Fear of Success are definitely not necessary. They were one shot stories with little significance to the overall character of Scarecrow. 75.152.155.200 06:59, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, it's a bit long. People should put in more pictures to string it all together, so that it has a reason to be long. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.237.219.34 (talk) 22:05, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Robotman?

I couldn't help noticing that another DC Comics character, the cyborg Robotman goes by the name of Robert Crane. Some guy named "Crane 117" noticed that too and posted it in the discussion page, but who's ever heard of Robotman? Is the name thing just a coincedence? Or is there some connection deep (deep deep) in the family tree? Feel free to comment.

It makes sense that Scarecrow would be "Crane" because of Sleepy Hollow. Cyborg superheroes have nothing in common with that. By the way, there's a Crane 117 up in the section about the image of this page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.237.219.34 (talk) 21:57, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
