"Eyes On Me" is the theme song for the video game Final Fantasy VIII, composed by Nobuo Uematsu, with lyrics (which are in English) by Kako Someya. There are several versions of this song (one of the background themes of the game called Julia, a theme for the character Julia Heartilly, is seemingly a rendered musical version of the song), but undoubtedly the most popular are the versions sung by Faye Wong, which made this Hong Kong singer renowned outside of East-Asia. The song ranked as one of the best sellers in Japan, selling some 400,000 copies , and receiving the Japan Gold Disc Award for Song of the Year (international) . The single included an instrumental version as well as Wong's ballad "Red Bean", composed by Jim Lau, which had appeared on her 1998 album Scenic Tour. The song was covered by Angela Aki for release on her "Kokoro no Senshi" single. In an Excite Japan interview, Aki reports composer Nobuo Uematsu as saying her version 'shed light on "Eyes on Me"' .

In 2004 a Japanese-language version entitled "Natsu no Arubamu" (Summer Album) with lyrics by Kazushige Nojima was included on Final Fantasy Song Book Mahoroba .

The song and the game
Towards the end of the production of the game, Nobuo Uematsu decided a ballad as theme song would would closely relate to the story and characters. This resulted in the game's developers examining "countless" artists, eventually deciding on Faye Wong. Uematsu claims "her voice and mood seem to match my image of the song exactly," and that her ethnicity "fits the international image of Final Fantasy." After negotiations were complete, "Eyes On Me" was recorded in Hong Kong with an orchestra. <ref name="lim">Maeda, Yoshitake (1999). Final Fantasy VIII Original Soundtrack (Limited Edition). In the game, the song is supposedly written by Julia Heartilly, a pianist who is the love interest of Laguna Loire. She has a conversation with Laguna which assumedly inspires her to write and perform this song.

Accompanied by his close friends Kiros Seagill and Ward Zabac, Laguna often visits a hotel lounge in Deling City in Galbadia where Julia plays the piano. Laguna always sits at the same table facing Julia, shyly gazing at her with admiration, thus the lyrics:

<blockquote>
"I saw you smiling at me</br>
Was it real or just my fantasy?</br>
You'd always be there in the corner</br>
Of this tiny little bar"
</blockquote>

One night during one of Laguna's usual visits, Julia approaches him and invites him to her hotel room so they could finally get to know each other. Although they appeared to make a genuine connection, this would be their first and last meeting, as shortly afterwards Laguna went on a mission to Esthar, ending in a near fatal accident. Laguna, near death, was taken to Winhill, where a woman named Raine (whom Laguna would later marry) nursed him back to health. Julia mistakenly assumed that Laguna had died, having not heard from him in many years. Although heartbroken, she eventually moved on to marry General Caraway, and later gave birth to Rinoa Heartilly. Julia later died in an automobile accident when Rinoa was only 5 years-old. Julia and Laguna's last encounter at the hotel probably inspired her the lyrics:

Chronologically later in the game, the song becomes the reflection of the unfolding love story between the hero and the heroine, Squall Leonhart (heavily implied to be Laguna's son), and Rinoa Heartilly (Julia's daughter). The song is heard repeatedly throughout the game in various incarnations as an instrumental piece. Its full version can be heard during Squall's and Rinoa's lonely moment at the Ragnarok Airships. It is played once more at the ending after the player defeats the final boss, Ultimecia.
